1040 battery drain during race

I have a 1040 that I've really enjoyed over the last few years. However, over the past several months it seems that battery drain has become an issue after some updates. Sometimes it works the way it should and I get the crazy long battery life I had the start. Other times, the battery drops rapidly.

Today, I rode a 100 mile gravel race. My battery died with about 15 miles left, about 5:45 in. It was at 100% when I started. I turned battery saver on when it hit 30%. It drained even faster after that.

I am on the verge of switching to something else. Has anyone experienced this and/or found a solution? I saw other battery drain posts, but no answers about this in particular.

FTR, I had a power meter, SRAM shifters/derailleurs, and a Garmin chest strap connected to the computer. The battery drain has been on multiple bikes with different configurations over the last few weeks.

  • I have a 1040 and it drains the battery very fast too. Today I had a 200km ride and it died after 5.30hr approx

battery was fully charged and saver was enabled. The screen said 30 hrs before I hooked into the ride with cadence, speed and hrm being connected. Phone also connected.

other riders say they get two days of riding per charge

    purchased new in Nov 2024.

is the battery poor or are there setting that need adjusting ?

  • I have the same problem. After 5.30 riding on a 200km group ride - the 1040 ( new 11/24) just died.  Started at 100% and drained even with battery saver enabled

    disappointing really.
    any recommendations?

  • Do you Guys have Garmin share turned on. This drains the battery quicker than before

  • That happened to me a while back. Turned out the backlight brightness had somehow gone from auto to always at 80%. So check your backlight setting, it is a battery burner.

  • Thanks. Will do

  • Yes made this move too    Todays ride of 4.5hrs  resulted in only 18% draw. So will continue to look at tweaks

    appreciate the help

  • I agree.  Check the brightness setting.  Mine was on for 4 hours yesterday during a ride and used about 11% battery.  I remember when I first got my 1040 I had a ride that it was burning through the battery at a very high rate and found that if the backlight is not set to automatic it would significantly impact battery life.

  • Thank you. My settings were also changed after an update. It is good now
