Garmin Coach plan changed from Cycling to Running

My plan changed suddenly. I checked this morning and I had several cycling sessions coming up. There was an update at around midday.

I was about to go cycling in the afternoon and see that all of the upcoming training sessions are about running, not cycling.

Obviously the update caused an issue, and I don't think it can be fixed without recreating the plan.

The watch is showing a new option in the plan settings: Running Target Type (Pace, Heart rate). That was not there before. Right next to it, it is also showing Cycling Target Type, which is expected. This is really confusing.

Is the plan intention to make me run as part of a cycling training plan?

Does anybody have a suggestion?

Can this be raised somewhere with Garmin to attract their attention?

Thanks

  • I have also realised that while the Connect app still shows my upcoming cycling races, the watch doesn't.

Restarting and syncing it don't help.

Today's update on the watch was 21.22

  • Thanks for sharing! I experience the same issue on my Forerunner 955 unfortunately.

    1) Garmin Coach is set up for cycling (incl. target race events) - initially "cycling" training sessions were correctly displayed.

    2) A couple of days later all upcoming training sessions were changed to "running".

    3) Synchronizing watch with Garmin Connect (PC or Phone) does not resolve the issue unfortunately.

Furthermore I saw this thread were this (or a similar) issue was reported resolved:
    forums.garmin.com/.../1861460

It would be great if someone could help on how to make this transparent to the Garmin Devs - Thanks a lot!

  • An update in case this helps someone fix it.

I got frustrated and decided to give Athletica a try. It created a plan including cycling sessions for the next 7 days.

These sessions showed up in Garmin Connect as workouts and in the calendar. But they didn't show up in the watch at all, despite restarting it again and syncing it. The calendar only showed Today with an event Suggested Workout, not even showing my personal calendar events.

The next frustration-driven action was to quit the Garmin Coach plan. Before that I also tried pausing and resuming it, changing training days, etc to force plan updates but nothing worked. After I quit the plan, the watch started displaying the upcoming races again! But it would still not show Athletica workouts.

I went cycling annoyed that I couldn't select the Athletica workout, thinking that the problem must be on the watch because Garmin Connect was doing the right thing. On my return decided to remove the watch from Garmin Connect, and add it again.

After this the Athletica workouts showed up appropriately and the calendar went back to normal.

I lost my Garmin Coach plan, so others should try reconnecting the watch before removing things.

I read somewhere that some files in the watch seem corrupted and I guess that reconnecting it helped redefining those files somehow.

I will continue with Athletica for now. After trying Humango last year it was good to have a better explanation of why workouts are needed, etc rather than the very simple Garmin Coach workouts.
