Please bring back USB mass storage

Hey Garmin,

i headed towards garmin because of the possibility to do most of the tasks "offline" and of course the pretty good battery life. With the decision to switch to "mtp" it is no longer possible to transfer tracks "offline" via usb otg with my android mobile device. Garmin connect software is no option because it sucks hard on mobile data volume. I am making longer gravel tours in foreign countries and mobile data volume is some kind of "gold powder" that is needed for more valuable tasks than to serve garmin connects hunger for data (i made bad expierences last year were garmin connect used around 400MB of data during a few days). If someone has a solution to reduce garmin connects hunger for data please post here. Other question: Can i make a firmware rollback from 25.25? Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance

best regards

Uwe

  • Too bad news! Now I've tried to do same things and transfering *.gpx was failed until I switched phone's fly mode OFF. Last year (maybe 2023) this feauture worked perfectly. So it ended to work in 2023-2024, not in 2019.

  • i opened a discussion about that in the "Garmin Connect Mobile Android" section.

  • It is possible (as before) to connect Edge to phone with usb-c - usb-c cable, and transfer gpx file from phone to Edge manually, as a file. No internet connectivity is needed for that.

I tested, and at least it works with Android smartphone.

  • Strange, are you on 25.25 for the edge? Which smartphone did you use? I tested the same but it didn't work. I can see the edges files and directories but could never transfer anything to the device (Samsung S21 FE).

  • Yes, on 25.25. Phone Galaxy S21 5G.

I I was able to copy files in both directions - from Edge/Garmin/Courses to phone, and from phone to Edge/Garmin/NewFiles - 3 gpx files, one by one.

Somehow only one newer usb-c cable worked reliably for this opetation. Another one (original Samsung) has initially allowed connection, but failed to sustain it and didn't allow copying the files.

  • No luck here. Tried 4 different cables. All had the same behaviour. Connection was successfull. The internal storage of the Edge was browsable. As soon as i try to copy a gpx file to "new files" it starts but hangs on 0% and "android.process.media" throws an error. After that the Edge is no longer visible on the android device.

  • When I tried OpenMTP months ago it did not recognize my Edge 1040, after your message I decided to try it again and this time it works, as long as I choose "Kalam MTP mode". Thanks, that was helpful

  • Hi, yes I got the same issue initially, and couldn't get around with it until I changed to new cable.

Did you try copying from Edge to phone at first? Does it work?

  • Hey, thats weird ... yes: it works when first copying some small file from Edge to Android device. Then i can copy gpx files to the "new files" directory, tested with S21 FE and Galaxy Tab s9+. Cool. Thanks a lot. How did you came across that? To first copy from Edge to Android?

  • +1. MTP is stupid for MacOS users.  Please bring back MTP!
