Incorrect FTP Update on Edge 1040 After Workout

Hi everyone,

I completed a 1.5 hour workout in my Z3 power zone, and the maximum power recorded during the session was 200w. However, when I finished the workout and clicked "Save," I received a notification that my FTP had been updated to 254w.

I manually reverted it to my previous FTP value.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? Could this be caused by a specific setting or calculation error? I’d appreciate any tips or solutions to prevent these incorrect updates from happening again.

  • Hi, there's no any contradiction between your average power in Z3 of 200 W and your evaluated FTP of 254. So it's not an error, it's Garmin FTP prediction algorithm.

But I just saw my 1040 started giving new FTP values (less than my current FTP) after a moderate Z3 workout, I noticed this after v.25.24 update. So it seems FTP evaluation algotithms have changed after latest SW update.

  • That's quite odd. I thought FTP calculations were based on the best 20-minute power effort, as long as it exceeded the current FTP. If the workout power is lower than the previous FTP, how is the new FTP estimated? I mean, how does the device distinguish between an easy or moderate ride and an all-out effort?

It seems like Garmin might have messed up the FTP algorithm.

By the way, this issue appeared during my first workout after updating the firmware. I don't have the device with me right now to confirm the version, but it should be v25.xx.

  • It was same with me - 1st workout after update to 25.24, and after 1 hour in HR Zone 3 I got new FTP detected which is 20w lower than my current FTP. was. Either it's a glitch, or Garmin algorithms can now estimate FTP even without 20-minute all-out effort, i.e. without FTP test.

Of course I'd be interested to learn more about this new algorithm, if available anywhere.
