FTP Calculation Question

I cycle with a Garmin 1040 Edge on my handlebars and a Forerunner 965 on my wrist. These wonderful devices are paired so I can follow my heart rate on my 1040 Edge as I ride. I also have a cadence meter on my bicycle cranks. I do not have a power meter. I have never used a power meter. Question. After a ride, my 965 shows a result for my FTP. How is that happening? How do I get an FTP calculation without a power meter?  Is the FTP calculation legitimate? Can I trust this FTP calculation?

  • In short.. No.

I used to cycle without power meter and got a calculated FTP like you.

I have the Garmin pedals now that measure power and my (new) FTP is significantly lower that the estimated one.

If you don't want to hurt your ego, don't buy a power meter :-)

  • Har!  Yeah.  I got a power meter so I can accurately quantify how badly I suck. And getting older, I'm getting worse.  Agree that any estimated FTP or power I've seen well overestimated the actual.  Good PMs are getting relatively cheap so might as well get one.  They certainly help with training.

  • I don't know the process of giving FTP calculation but I always feel it is not accurate moto x3m
