Rerouting Problem

Something weird is happening with my rerouting.

If I go off course whilst riding/navigating a course that I've pinned/synced from RidewithGPS, my 1040 does not reroute me (despite my auto rerouting setting).  I just see my course (blue line) deviating from the route that remains fixed with no rerouting support on map on in text.

However, if I ride a course that the 1040 has created after I've selected a point on the 1040 map, and I deviate from the route, then the 1040 reroutes me.

Same ride profile (ie same navigation/rerouting setting) - one scenario the rerouting works, the other it doesn't.

Has anyone experienced this problem? Any advice?

  • It seems the issue could be related to how the Garmin 1040 handles externally synced routes versus internally created routes. You might want to try rechecking your rerouting settings and ensure that routes imported from RidewithGPS are fully compatible with Garmin’s rerouting functionality.

  • Indeed, there are recalculation settings for Courses and separately for Routes.
When you import a track or route from an outside source it will be converted to a Course and the recalculation setting for courses will apply, when you create a route internally it will be a Route and the recalculation setting for routes will apply. It took me a while before I understood the difference.

And then it gets confusing... When you are navigating a course and deviate from it and allow recalculation to get back on your course, a new course is calculated - note the way back to your original course is a Route now and from that moment the Route recalculation setting is effective and NOT that for Courses. There are many complaints about the recaculation behavior, but when you understand what's happening life gets easyer. Happy cycling!

  • Update - I double/triple checked my settings … consistent  (& correct) for rerouting of both routes and courses. I finally resolved the issue by now a factory reset of the device. Rerouting now works!
