Edge 1040 Review - GPS Issues & unexpected Customer Service

I've used the Edge 1040 for almost 6 months, multiple times each week. If I had to restart - I would buy it again, but not the bundle. I'd buy the sensors separately. I'd buy a flavor of the HRM Pro so I can use it with apps. Timing permitting, buy the Edge on sale, during the off season (Oct-Dec). I would also exchange it with the store instead of waiting for warranty replacement if maps or GPS didn't work within the first weeks.

GPS on my 1040 has always been flaky - "Acquiring Satellites" for entire days or rides so maps won't work. Sometimes, it had GPS signal in the morning, but not in the afternoon, and vice versa. Sometimes, GPS worked all day. I contacted support after RTFM and trying many options from the Support Forums. Garmin Support confirmed via 'System', 'About', 'Copyright Info' that my GPS Version is 0.00 for some reason, instead of 11.0.

Did it come like this? Did a firmware update fry the GPS? There were many updates out of the box. Why does it boot up at 11.0 then switch to 0.00? Now Garmin is warranty replacing my NEW Edge 1040 with a RECERTIFIED Edge 1040. I paid full price only to end up with a recertified product.

The features of the Edge 1040 are plentiful. Read the manual - it has a lot of information. I like the maps when they worked. I enjoy all the data it gathers. The daily suggested workouts are nice when getting back into training and it connects with my trainer (use the cadence sensor with your non-Garmin trainers to minimize data drops). The speed and cadence sensors work well, and surprisingly, detected jumps when I was at the bike park. I like being able to download maps from and create routes in connect.garmin.com for my Edge. I'm still learning all the many nuances of how to use it.

I like you can customize each profile, change which screens you can see and rearrange the order of the screen and the tiles on each screen. The hydration & nutrition reminders are nice for the longer rides. I like that I can create my own workouts based on HR or Power, including warm-ups, intervals and such, and cool downs.

The HRM Dual is garbage & only works with Garmin devices & some apps. So far, HRM Dual doesn't work with the apps I've tried (wahoo, etc.) - not even with the Garmin Connect app (and this info is only documented in support.garmin.com - why not on the webpage or in the Manual?). You might need to wear it off center for it to work, & then it only works 90% consistently. It works for bike rides where a few missed HR beats don't matter big picture or are averaged out. However, using all the tips from the manual, I cannot use it to get through a 3 minute standing stress test without an error, "There appears to be a problem with the data. Check the chest strap." message every time. My wife's HRM Pro Plus works every time for the stress test.

Please Do Better, Garmin.

  • You've been using the HRM Dual for 6 months, which means I'm betting you're still using it still on the factory battery. I'm curious about your opinion after you replace the battery in it for the first time and discover after 2-3mc that it's already drained :) You didn't know about that, did you?
Garmin's *** pulsometers last years are some kind of farce - a joke. Through a poorly made rubber o-ring around the battery, the first replacement of the battery causes it to deform - moisture gets inside causing the pulse meter to be in a state of “short circuit” thus draining the battery much faster. In my case, the HRM Dual for the first one lasted for 6,000 km of cycling routes. After replacing the battery - after 2000 km I had to replace it again.
Fortunately, I also have an old heart rate monitor that I had with the Edge 520, it does not have BT technology, so it drains the battery less, and I calmly ride 6000 to 8000 km of routes on it ( about half a year of daily riding at about 3h). Garmin is aware of this because when you complain about it they replace it for you. But Garmin is not a philanthropic company - the costs of these “free” replacements are spread over other new products that we customers then bear - anyway.

    Edit: P.S.
LOL: the word “b r e a s t” was starred automatically after posting. Garmin - congrats on the censorship :D

  • Thanks for the reply. I read in the forums/support about the factory battery for chest HRMs being an issue so I replaced it (after about 2 months of use), which didn't affect the performance good or bad.

What is 2-3mc ? I haven't voltmeter-tested the new battery yet to see if it's drained again. I'll have to do so sometime soon.

I'll check my wife's HRM to see if it's allowing moisture inside. She's changed the battery a couple times.

  • You don't need to use a voltmeter. Download yourself your last activity as a .FIT file and with any .fit file viewer find the device information. You will also find the voltages of the sensors used.

  • Having HRM-Dual For More than 2 years and replaced batteries, I haven't had any issue yet. Never had an error or anything while using it. As for oring deforming after replacement, a coat of silicone grease always do the trick on oring-rubber seals.
As for connectivity, TBH, I am able to connect it through BT or ANT+ to my phone and use it with apps like strava etc

  • We also use a bit of dielectric silicone grease on the o-ring seal.

Good to know it works with strava, Thanks! I haven't tried it or zwift. There are a lot of apps to try.
