1040 turn guidance.

Route with turns show on map but no text info.  I had a 530 before this so I'm familiar with most of the Garmin settings.

I get a message when I load a course telling me that the navigation may not work properly due to missing map coverage in my area.  It worked fine with the 530.  What's different?

  • Do you have the same maps loaded on both? By that I mean same map regions.

  • Looks like your Edge doesn't have (or can't read) maps for your area, so it couldn't identify any crossroads, that's why no turn-guidance. Did you check the map datascreen if it's a map visible there?

  • Sold the 530 so I can't compare.

  • I can see a map on the screen and as I ride (without the navigation) it ID"s the road I'm riding on the banner. I also see some crossroads and the actual turn road on the map. The only North American map on mine is labeled "Cycle Map North America".  I don't remember that the 530 had the word "cycle" in it. The other option is the Trailforks map. I'm not doing offroad so I'm not using it.

When I'm in navigation mode the banner is blank, so no routing info is displayed.  The elevation screen profile shows upcoming elevation so it knows where it is and where it's going.

  • Okay I see. If the map full title doesn't say "Routable" then I guess the map may be non-routable, i.e Edge can't identify any crossroads or turns, it's just like picture behind the cursor. What's the map version you have, is it the latest one updated with Garmin Express software via laptop?

  • I too leapt from a 530 to a 1040, it's a big leap. To see what maps you have, note the format of this list changed in the last (24.18/19) version...

Menu > Activity Profiles > [Select a Profile] > Navigation > Map > Configure Maps (note this is a per Profile setting so can be different between profiles)

Shows you a list of the maps installed on your 1040 and if they are Enabled or Disabled. They have to be Enabled to be available for Navigation All the Garmin ones are Routeable and the name no longer includes the "Routeable" label.

1040 have access to all world maps but they all don't fit so you have to load the ones you want via Garmin Express (or on the device since 24.xx but this is very slow), usually 2 regions will fit but the big ones NA (comes in 2 independent bits ) & EU (comes in 3 bits) might have problems

Make sure the maps for the region you are actually in are installed and enabled.

Make sure Turn Guidance is enabled (Navigation > Courses > [3 vertical dots top-right of screen] > Turn Guidance = Enabled

Make sure the "Guide Text" (the directions at the top of the Map screen) is Enabled (Menu > Activity Profiles > [Select a Profile] > Navigation > Map > Guide Text = "Always Display" or "When Navigating"

Enable the Geocode "maps" if you are going to be searching for addresses etc

  • Thank you all. I was using the preloaded map (which I did an update/reinstall) but it was the NA MIDDLE America. I'm in the Atlanta area. I just installed the full NA map and that appears to have solved the problem! I only tested it by walking down my street while navigating on one of my "from home" routes and it looks like everything is in order.

If I still have issues I'll repost the info here.

    Thanks again!
