Will we ever be able again to load a different course during a running activity?

In a previous firmware version (probably v20.x) I was able to load a course, ride it, stop navigation mid-ride and load a new course (e.g. because there was a sudden road block) and continue recording the activity. While it might not have been possible with the Komoot sync, it was possible with other apps like GPX importer.

Ever since then, this function is entirely gone and in order to load a different course, I have to completely stop the current activity, resulting in 2 different rides/activites at the end of the trip. This is really stupid and I don't know why that function was ever removed and never brought back. I was hoping it might be back in v24, but no.

  • Actually me too, just recently bought Edge 1040 for this feature. And since most of my rides are within internet coverage zone, I'm happy to see this feature works for me on 1040 (and my wide's 540) quite OK, although it requires internet on the phone.

For those who're already puzzled from above, if if actually works, or if it doesn't, but don't want to dig thru this whole thread - here's link to video instruction  and demo, enjoy!

  • I copied GPX to Edge's Courses subfolder.

But this did not help fully, as Edge can't use GPX, just doesn't show it in Courses menu on device. I guess the file needs to be in FIT format, not GPX.

You need to copy the files to the NewFiles subfolder.

You should copy FIT files to NewFiles also. (Copying FIT files directly to courses might work but it's not the "official procedure".)

  • Thanks David, and I also had this old-known rule shooting back to my mind already after late night attempts. I just forgot it since last year)) And what's your view,, is it anyhow possible to transfer a GPX from phone to Edge without internet on the phone during an activity? Except for USB cable option.

I mean this note from Gexporter app developer that also seems to apply to GRouteLoader - Gexporter combination

    * Since 2019 the Garmin Connect App just refuses the connection from gimporter to gexporter, if the phone has no internet access (although none is needed). Please bug Garmin with reports about: "`makeWebRequest` not working to `localhost`, if the phone has no internet access. "

  • I’d have to try it. I’d tend to assume the GImporter developer would be correct.

The Garmins download files using a URL.

By the way, GExporter (the app in your phone) converts the GPX file to FIT and presents the FIT file to be downloaded. Edges can only download FIT files (and only course files at that).

  • Does anyone tried the usb-c cable method with an IPhone 15
