Will we ever be able again to load a different course during a running activity?

In a previous firmware version (probably v20.x) I was able to load a course, ride it, stop navigation mid-ride and load a new course (e.g. because there was a sudden road block) and continue recording the activity. While it might not have been possible with the Komoot sync, it was possible with other apps like GPX importer.

Ever since then, this function is entirely gone and in order to load a different course, I have to completely stop the current activity, resulting in 2 different rides/activites at the end of the trip. This is really stupid and I don't know why that function was ever removed and never brought back. I was hoping it might be back in v24, but no.

  • I just tried with 24.19.

    Start a course (and activity).
Upload a new course via connect app.
    Stop the current course.
Start the newly uploaded course in the same activity.

    No issues ...

  • I think, the OP means not simply load a new course (what is possible with no issues), but he means „download“ a course to the device. And yes, thats not possible during an activity. But I have to admit, I do not know GPX Importer…

  • Works for me. If it isn’t working for you, stop Bluetooth on your watch, kill Garmin Connect, switch on Bluetooth and open the GCM app again. There go into Training and Planning, Courses, open the course you want and send it to the device. GCM should start a synch it the course will appear on the Edge. If GCM doesn’t start the sync, start it manually.

I can transfer new courses right now from Garmin Connect to the App even when the timer is running. No Pause, Stop or save is needed.

I believe its not possible to use ConnectIQ Apps to import new courses, but everything wich is on Garmins servers is fine. So connecting your favorite planning website to Connect is quite useful.

That functionality was there since release of the Edge 1040 and is one of the main reasons I bought it.

  • That is what I mean as well with 'Upload a new course via connect app'.
I downloaded (pushed?) a new course from the Connect app on my phone to the edge 1040 while an activity with another course was in progress (paused).

  • Thanks everyone, I will try it with the Connect app. I was referring to Komoot via phone and apps for importing GPX tracks via Bluetooth from phone to the 1040 (e.g. tracks created with Locus Maps). When sending a new course from Komoot, the 1040's screen just goes blank. When trying with a GPX app from phone to 1040, it just gets stuck while downloading the GPX via Bluetooth. This did definately work several firmware versions before but not anymore.

Pushing via the Connect app is a useless additional step for me, but well, better than nothing. I won't be able to create tracks in Locus and send them mid-ride to my 1040 then, which is the best solution for offline routing, because how would I get a .gpx track from my phone to Connect?

  • Not an offline solution, yet it if you have any kind of internet connection then the following might work for you.

    1. Save gpx in a phone folder.
    2. Open connect in web browser, not in connect app (connecting to connect in web browser for the first time may open the app eventually, yet it should work every next time as long as you stay logged in to your account in the web browser).
    3. Upload gpx using web interface.
    4. Gpx should be listed in connect app (manual sync might be necessary).

Not as convenient as "just pushing" from Komoot yet it is some kind of workaround.

  • This still won't work when there is no Internet coverage. I stranded in the mountains in front of a blocked road and had to build a new route. Only possible with Locus Maps offline routing and then pushing the new track to the 1040 via Bluetooth GPX importer. But that's exactly what's not working anymore.

  • Once the .gpx is in a phone folder, I just hit the share (open in) button and choose the Connect app; this will automatically import the gpx as a course.  Actually, there is no need to store in a phone folder; I can directly 'open in/share' any gpx towards Connect app.

  • This is great, thank you, I never tried this. A pity is that it still requires internet connection to work.

  • Exactly, I want the pure upload through Bluetooth, since it's there anyway. For me it's a real downgrade and I don't know why they removed it.
