Firmware 24.18/24.19 Edge 1040 - Garmin <-> Strava

With the latest software I start noticing a big difference between the time recorded with Garmin and what I see on Strava once uploaded.

22/09 - MTB ride; Time: 2:04:35; Distance: 46,32km; Avg: 22,3
Strava: Time: 2:05:39; Distance: 46,32km; Avg: 22,1
Software: 24.19

21/09 - Road; Time: 2:16:52; Distance: 60,01km; Avg: 26,3
Strava: Time: 2:18:21; Distance: 60,01km; Avg: 26,0
Software: 24.19

18/09 - MTB ride; Time: 3:20:16; Distance: 78,17km; Avg: 23,4
Strava: Time: 3:22:35; Distance: 78,16km; Avg: 23,2
Software: 24.18

With the previous version, the difference was only a few seconds:

05/09 - Road; Time: 2:22:04; Distance: 74,48km; Avg: 31,5
Strava: Time: 2:22:14; Distance: 74,48km; Avg: 31,4
Software: 21.18

01/09 - MTB ride; Time: 1:53:40; Distance: 46,78km; Avg: 24,7
Strava: Time: 1:53:56; Distance: 46,77km; Avg: 24,6
Software: 21.18

Someone experiencing the same issues?
Garmin or Strava issue?

  • Strava always seems to do total time and average speed of that. Garmin seems to use moving time and use that for average. Always been that way. Try looking in “analysis” is Strava and find the times and compare moving times. Also check the auto start / stop settings are not contributing.  Try settings this really low or off - especially on MTB rides where if set too high it would trigger a lot more making the moving time seem to be a lot lower.

  • If I look at the first ride I mentioned:

    22/09 - MTB ride; Time: 2:04:35; Distance: 46,32km; Avg: 22,3
    Strava: Time: 2:05:39; Distance: 46,32km; Avg: 22,1
    Software: 24.19

    I see under Strava analysis:
    Moving time: 2:05:39
    Elapsed time: 2:07:01

    In Connect:
    Time: 2:04:35
    Moving Time: 2:04:35
    Elapsed Time: 2:06:11

The MTB profile has auto pause on when stopped.
For this ride (more or less a gravel ride) there were just a few stops to cross a road.

The road ride on 21/09 has a difference of 1m30s as well ...

  • I just noticed that I'm no longer 'grouped' together with all the other riders in Strava as well.  Strange, I never had that with 21.18 or older firmware ...

  • This is a known issue when your device goes to sleep when the activity recording has been paused. The timestamps get messed up in the recorded activity file, which results in the fact that Strava cannot match your activity to that of others anymore.

The workaround (until Garmin fixes this issue) is to power down the device when activity recording is paused, or don't let it sleep.

  • I confirm.  Had another activity yesterday (MTB ride) and I made sure the device didn't go to sleep.

The time/average difference between garmin and strava is like before 24.18 (only a few seconds) and I'm grouped again on strava.
