Disable firmware download via mobile network

Is it possible to disable automatic firmware update via mobile network? It's freaking insane that Garmin Connect can freely download 500 mb firmware without asking me and I have to pay for it because carrier plan limit was unexpectedly exceeded. Being in vacation in other region, I want to upload and download activities via the app, but I don't want anything heavy to be downloaded without my confirmation.

    The FW update is 34MB, to stop the download disable phone & Wi-Fi connections on the 1040 until you are ready, done.

    Well... That's not a solution, it's an ugly workaround (one more - don't use phone at all). But I think you understand it:-)

    It does not update maps unless you initiate it and then they would be GBs, It could be downloading courses if you have set up linking with planning sites, strava etc or done "send to device" in one of the planning sites but 500mb is a lot of courses especially as most would come as fit files (ie small), it will download GPS satellite location files each week or so but they are small, so no idea what 500mb could be, I understand many people are hooked on being connected but I just like to ride and do so without any connection and a by-product of this is I have never got sensor disconnects. Perhaps wait till you can use a "free" wi-fi to down/up load stuff but otherwise keep phone disconnected. There is an old trick to prevent FW downloads and that is to create a dummy GUPDATE.GCD file in the 1040 Garmin directory and this will generally block real files from downloading (file can be an empty text file)

    If you find the "solution" let us know.

    ps more thoughts, if you are on 24.18 it could be scanning for hazards to warn you about, it don’t use it so have no idea what bandwidth it would use. I doubt Garmin worries about what bandwidth their features use, they would just consider it unlimited and free
