Garmin 1040 Solar mounting problems

My 1040 solar for cycling has stopped showing percent elevation, continually re-calculates, keeps re-routing, the map spins a lot and the speed & distance shows zero at times. My device is a little over a year. No matter where I ride, these problems occur, & more frequently lately. I'm very disappointed & frustrated with this expensive device. I've been offered a refurbished device by the company. But that don't sound good neither. Is it time to just give up on this faulty product? :( HELP!?!

  • I can appreciate & understand your frustration.

Depending on your region the warranty can be 2 rather than 1 year, but I assume Garmin support will have verified this?

"Refurbished" devices can be indistinguishable from new, just packaging but value of their offer depends on how much $$ they want and if you were previously happy with device?

Have you tried a "factory reset" (Menu>System>Device Reset>[either Reset to Default or Delete Data and Reset, second option usually better]. Due to poor coding Garmin devices can get "tired" if used for a long time especially without a power off  between rides (ie only Sleep). A Reset often cleans things up, resets memory, clears various internal registers and processing locations. With 1040 there is minimal loss of settings, profiles, sensors, most recoverable from Garmin Connect Mobile (do a sync first). You may have to re-pair the phone and enter Wi-Fi settings and reload CIQ Apps / Fields.

Of course the device may have become faulty but the symptoms you describe might also be cured by a reset. Good Luck
