BIGGER user location cursor / symbol on the Map, 110 users have said YES (Now over to Garmin)

Despite years (decades) of ignored user requests for this, a couple of months ago Garmin released the new 1050 with a BIGGER user location symbol / cursor on the Map screen and also foreshadowed that many of the 1050 software features would migrate to the x40 devices. I raised a request in the then current 23.xx beta for the migrated features to include the BIGGER cursor. This request quickly gathered 31* "up-votes" indicating other beta user support for this request. (*31 being the highest, by far, amount of support for any beta request in the previous 2 years.)

The 23.x beta was closed and the 24.x beta opened (I assume so the betas for 1040 & 1050 could be aligned) but this meant users could no longer support the 23.x request. I therefore raised a new 24.x request that again quickly attracted another 30+ "up-votes" but there have been 7 beta versions since and still no BIGGER cursor.

The recent 24.15 beta looks to me like a late / final beta before a production release (despite still having many issues) so it you want a BIGGER cursor your opportunity to support the request may be closing.

If you want a BIGGER cursor like the 1050 (see below) then go to this beta request,

20 September 2024 update: The 24.x beta has ended with the 24.18/19 production version releases, Garmin has closed comments & up-voting on 24.xx beta items. A Garmin staff member has contacted me to advise they will raise a "case" regarding a larger cursor for the 1040 like on the 1050 and add links to the beta proposals as supporting items. If I hear anything more I will keep you up to date. The final up-vote count was 110, (over 5 times any previous request item in the last 2 years), plus 31 up-votes for the original request in the previously closed 23.x beta section.

               1050                              1040

  • If the "usual" schedule continues the next beta would appear soon and we will see if Garmin has blessed our x40 with a bigger cursor / symbol like on the 1050. Given that the 1050 has this larger symbol the effort, cost and risk of doing the same for x40 would be minimal (almost zero). The support for such a change was amply demonstrated so the provision of this change is a bit of a test of if Garmin actually cares about its x40 customers. My GPS device needs are very simple and I would be happy to swap ALL the new things in 24.xx for the bigger symbol on my otherwise prefect 1040.

  • No problem seeing the multiple huge white arrows on the course during navigation. I can never see my own arrow.

  • And I even have difficulties too see these huge wihite arrows because in the high contrast map they are displayed on a white background. That and the small position arrow means when looking in the sun or too low background light I don't see where I am and where I have to go.

  • Instead of adding features that are useless, such as accident warnings like car GPS, or groupride, Garmin should stabilize the 1040 and meet the real demands of cyclists.
Larger buttons to use the Varia safely while riding, Garmin did it to indicate incidents, these engineers are completely off the subject with each update, worse they add bugs corrected in previous versions of fw, it's completely incredible. The great autonomy of the 1040 makes it a perfect GPS for ultra-distance and bikepacking, but with an erroneous altimeter as soon as it rains, long routes that bug and disastrous management of personalized POIs, impossible to make a stopping point strategy during an ultra race, nothing is displayed in the list of POIs when creating personalized POIs, (I will open a post on this problem)
