Strava Segments Not Displaying During Courses on Edge 1040 - Help Needed

Hi Garmin Community,

I've been a long-time user of Garmin devices and have enjoyed seamless Strava segment tracking while following courses on my Edge 530 for years. Recently, I upgraded to the Edge 1040, and I've encountered an issue where segments are not displaying during courses.

Here's a quick rundown of the situation:

  • Device: Edge 1040
  • Previous Device: Edge 530 (Segments worked fine here)
  • Issue: Segments do not show up when following a course
  • What I've Tried:
    • Ensured that segments are enabled in the settings
    • Synced all Strava segments and courses through Garmin Connect
    • Confirmed that the segments are available and active on the Edge 1040
    • Performed a soft reset on the device
    • Updated the Edge 1040 to the latest firmware

This is really frustrating as one of the reasons I upgraded was for better performance, but this issue is hampering my experience. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and if so, have you found a solution? Any advice or troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Best regards,

  • following. Sorry for the "me too" just found your thread. Have same issue. Opened another thread about same issue. Sorry: no solution yet

  • I have made an observation, which might solve the issue. It's a little work-around: When placing a POI, while planning the route in STRAVA like "Coffeebeak" on the track, the Segments are also placed in the displayed list of trackpoints on the Edge 1040 and are also displayed correct during the ride when the segment is entered.

I have experienced this just once, so I don't know if this really is the final solution or just a one-time-experience. I will investigate further this week.

  • This isn't really a bug of the Edge 1040 but rather how Strava creates routes,

When you create and look at a route in Strava it will show a list of random Sections that it has chosen.  If you happen to have one of these Sections Stared before creating the Route it will include it in the Route that is sent to Garmin Connect and when you look at the Route in Garmin Connect you will see the Segment on the map. Then once synced to your Garmin the Segment will pop up when riding the Route.

It will not include any other segments regardless of if you have the Started or not if they aren't in this list of Segments and again you will see then in Garmi Connect as they aren't on the map.

If you see a segment in the List you don't have Started and think you would like it included, Star the segment and then Edit the route and it should then sync the change to Garmin Connect.

  • It wasn't like this in the past. During calculation of the route Garmin was able to see if there are Segments in the route and you got info how much is it to the next segment etc.

Do you mean to edit Strava Route in Garmin Connect?

  • Any route edits should be done in Strava.

To me this is a Strava issue because if you happen to have one of the random sections stared that it suggests when you create a route then the whole process works fine.  The problem is Strava is ignoring your stared Segments when it sends the Route to Garmin.  Strava need to make a change so that the list of Sections includes any stared segments before it then randomly picks its sections.

Strava is just using Garmin Connect to Sync the routes and segments and then the Edge 1040 does what its been told to do.  Garmin Connect doesn't know about the Strava segments.

This is really annoying and makes the whole process useless in my opinion but I suspect the change was made so Strava could introduce Course Points in the route it sends Garmin

  • Same problem,  I also tried a full reset of the 1040 but everytime i follow a route I don't get live segment. If someone find a solution is my hero!

    Yes I have strava premium

If not following a route I get my live segment

  • This never worked for me on the 830 or the 1040. Segments do not show up when following a route.

  • As previously mentioned this is an issue with Strava and how they pick which segment ts to include in a route.  It’s nothing to do with Garmin.

  • By quickly examining the FIT export of the course synced from Strava to Garmin you could see, if any segments are included or not. This procedure should help to get them synced:

    1) Start Strava map creation. Import the existing route or create your own.

    2) Star the segments you would like to see on the route.

    3) Save the route, unticking the "Favorite" star in the popup.

    4) Go to My routes on Strava and mark the route as Favorite.

This should make the segments seen on Garmin Course as start/stop waypoints. Let know if this has helped.
