Problem maps

 This picture shows what I see on my Edge 1040 Solar. No local roads, only the motorways. This is only recently, before I had a detailed map on my screen.

I tried through Garmin Express to renew the maps, nothing to see. After deleting the *.img files, nothing to see.

After placing an old img file in directory ‘ new files’, unplug and rstart, nothings happens and the img remains in the new files directory.

What to do to get the details back? What to do to be able to manage the maps in Garmin Express?

  • Map .img files should be placed directly in the folder ..\Garmin. You'll see more .img files there.

  • That already is the case. I think 5 different img files are in this directory.

  • Are the maps enabled on your unit? See Main menu > Activity profiles > your profile > Navigation > Map > Map Information.

    As for Express map manager not showing anything, you could try removing your Edge 1040 from Express and then re-adding the device.

  • Can you upload a screenshot of the files in your Garmin folder? I can then compare it with mine to see what you're missing (also NL here so we're using the same maps)

  • I have the following files on mine (only West Europe installed):

    * D4713090A.img - Garmin DEM Map EU 2023.10

    * D4728160A.img - Garmin Geocode Map EU 2024.10

    * D6017110A.img - Garmin Cycle Map EU 2024.10, West

    * D7557120A.img - Trailforks 2024.10

    * gmapbmap.img - Worldwide DEM Basemap,NR v8

    * gmaptz.img - Time Zone Map

  • Hi Jim, yep I have those too, so curious of Fietsbie also has these. Sounds like one is missing or broken.

    Just a question - how can you see the version of the gmapbmap you're using?

    Latest Express update apparently removes gmapbmap if you uninstall all maps. I had a backup but I'm not quite sure if I'm using the correct version now.

  • You can see the version of the basemap with JaVaWa Device Manager.

    Recent Express versions indeed seem to remove the basemap when removing (all?) installed maps via Express Map Manager. But it also reinstalled the basemap when I installed a map again.

  • Ah, I don't have that installed but my gmapbmap is 46mb and for what I read that should be the correct one.
    Someone else told me too that Express reinstalls the basemap after installing a map again, weirdly enough mine didn't.
    My whole issue started when my map had the 'locked' status after updating it. Fixed it by manually deleted the img files and reinstalling through Express, but I see more posts about the same issue lately from others. It's a bit of a buggy mess at the moment, the whole map update process.

  • yes, all maps on the Edge are enabled. Removal in Express, reinstalling express, old version, no difference.
