bluetooth connections to power meter not working with firmware 24.06

why do you wanna pair it as bluetooth power sensor, why dont you pair it via ant+? that is the primary channel in Garmins, and better protocol for powermeters (the hrm is ok via bt, but the power is better via ant+ imho)

Have had zero issues with the bt channel. Have been doing so with these pedals for the better part of 2 years. I guess ANT+ was historically better in terms of reliability, but that's not really an issue anymore. I can't recall hearing or reading anything which suggested one was better or worse (and the specific technical reasons why) than the other.

if you've got links to sources or recommendations (dc rainmaker for example) I'm happy to learn something new here!

the latest official Garmin advice... the ANT+ is their own protocol (and they develop everything for that), the BT Power protocol is not so detailed as the ANT+ (ok, the Wahoo pedals are not transmitting any cycling dynamics data just power and balance, so the BT Power is sufficient , the only problem if the powermeter is dual and working as 2 sensors (left and right separately, the Garmins cant handle that, only if it works with master and slave combo, so when only 1 pedal is communicating with the head unit with combined data, and the other is communicating with this pedal only) . there is continous modification in the ANT+/BT handle in the x40 series in the past 1 year for sure, with every new betas lots of sensors are working better but a few working worse or dont work completely. probably with the 24.06 the wahoo pedals are the new victim via BT, test it with ANT+, and if it works, work on that. (FYI: GPLama is also using the power sensors just via ANT+  with Garmins, the Wahoo head units or the others (especially which didnt pay for ANT+ licence and no ANT+ in the head unit)  are probably working better via BT (but as i wrote, with limited data with certain powermeters)

A couple of questions.

What software version are the pedals on?

How many BT connections do they have. Unlike ANT that has a many to many communication model. BT is a one to one model so the number of concurrent connections is limited to the number of channels defined in the software/hardware. 

That is one of the best answers I've ever read to a question like the one I asked. That is very well reasoned and it's super helpful. You've convinced me, ANT+ it is. While I still think they should fix the BT connection, what you wrote makes perfect sense. I think I wrongly assumed "newer protocol, more/better data" and that turns out not to be the case, and better is just use the Garmin developed protocol with Garmin devices for best results for reasons given.

As a short term fix and to confirm it is just a protocol issue could you try switching to using ANT.

Hi Alan, latest firmware from wahoo (1.0.6) last updated by Wahoo June 2023.

only the one connection to the Garmin 1040. I make sure to NOT have them connected to my phone or whatever, because I've noticed previously they can only handle the one connection reliably.

Agree with both of you, I will switch to ANT+ and if no issues there call it done. Will revert after today's ride to confirm what happened (or didn't).
