Why does my 1040 keep detecting sensor?

Every-time a start a new outdoors ride, my 1040 beeps every 3 to 5 seconds or so.  A message flashes up say SPD / Cadence Sensor Detected.  It does this for around 10 minutes or so.

It drives me and anyone I’m riding with crazy.

My speed and cadence sensor is a magnet in the spike and a sensor built into the chainstay of my Trek.  I believe it’s Ant+.  Firmware is all up to date.  I’m typically following a course that I’ve pre-planned.

Does anyone know a fix?  Cheers.

  • Very similar to what I am getting after the update. I have the Garmin speed sensor on my front wheel hub.  I have a Giant Power Meter and the Garmin HRM.  I have to do a reboot (or whatever it is when you power off and power on) of the Edge to get everything to reconnect.  Very annoying!!

  • Detected” or “Connected” ?

There are no notifications for sensor disconnections but there are for connections. Obviously after the initial connection subsequent connections must have been preceded by a disconnection. There are numerous posts regarding disconnections and neither users nor Garmin seem to have any definitive idea how to stop them. For my very limited set of sensors I have found practising radio silence ( ie disable wi-fi and Bluetooth / phone) has eliminated most disconnections but this is not ideal for most users. It might be a frequency interference issue or the edge might be overwhelmed with too many connections for its processing capability?

ps it is possible to see or at least infer these via the ANT RX/TX logs , I don’t know if there are BT equivalents and I am long term mystified why Garmin can’t fix these.

  • I had the same problem with my Bpntraeger/Trek DuoTrap sensor. After changing the battery of the sensor it worked again without any interruptions.

  • That hadn’t occurred to me.  I’ll change the battery in the morning.

  • Interesting.  Just happened to me again.  This time with speed sensor, power meter, and Wahoo Tickr.  The power meter and Tickr are fully charged.

  • Does it not show you the battery status (for each sensor or is it only Garmin sensors?) at the end of every ride?
