21.18 Very slow rendering: zoom detail issue >= 8km

After updating to 21.18 there seems to be a bug that causes to show way too much detail >= 8km zoom, which did not occur before.

This causes the rendering to be VERY slow:

+- 45 sec on 50km instead of 2 sec on 50 km

Or +- 15 sec on 8km instead of 1 sec on 8km

Issue (too much detail in existing profile) :

Expected (works correctly in a new profile):

I have tried the reset navigation-map-presentation button, but this made no difference. I also set all zoom options the same as the new profile, no difference.I also tried with and without the widgets at the bottom: no difference.

This only occurs on my existing cycling profile. I created a new profile and this does not have this issue.

  • update 1: reïnstalling EU cyclemap 2024.10 partially solved the issue:

my original profile now renders as expected for >= 8km, but it is still much slower than before on 5km: 35 seconds until the rendering including place names is finished (13 seconds in the new profile)

update 2: disabling 9 sensors (wahoo and other bike) didn't help for performance

  • update 3: Garmin Edge uses SQL Lite internally in Garmin\SQL\Internal\*.db but optimizing them with DB Browser (SQL Lite) was not required.

(not) I moved all files from the SD card to my PC and back (root img files and Garmin\SQL\Internal\*.db) but I don't believe this made a difference.

  • Fixed :

Map rendering is now much faster, back to normal speeds.
The issue is caused by which maps are loaded (I guess this was changed by one of the last 2 updates).

Performance is good with this specific set enabled:
Worldwide DEM Basemap       (MUST, otherwise no lower detail >= 8km)
Garmin Geocode Map EU        (required for searching addresses)
Garmin Cycle Map EU West    (detail)
Garmin DEM Map EU                (on/off gives no difference, now leaving this off)

Now the rendering is as follows:
       5km: more detail, 5 sec
       8km: more detail, 10 sec
       12km: more detail, 19 sec
       >= 20km: high level (expected), instant
