Is this the end of the line for our x40 devices or will some features trickle down (didn’t for x30 when 1040 arrived )
(PS see below but DC Rainmaker & GPLAMA quote Garmin as saying we should ok for a while)

Why do people ask this same silly question when Garmin releases something new? Garmins support of their previous models (watches, head units, etc.) should be an indicator that they're not going to abandon…
As both DCRainmaker and GPLama pointed out, the 1040 will probably remain a viable unit for quite a while, given its significantly longer battery duration compared to the 1050.
There are endurance cycling…

Don't care if they release even 1990,until they fix the bugs of the current devices i don't give them a single euro on future.
I just got the update on my 1040 with Garmin Share. I haven't checked out what other features are available.

In my opinion, the issue isn't whether or not Garmin will abandon their new (yes new) products. The real problem is FOMO. If it's that important to always have the latest than buy the 1050. After all it's your money. If not, chill and pay attention to how Garmin actually does things and consider what early reviewers have repeatedly stated...which is Garmins continued support for the 1040 with updates that mirror the 1050.

"..should be an indicator..." yes and that's why the question is asked because since the 1040 release (2 years) and 540/840 release (one year) the 1030/830/530 have pretty much not had any update and are a couple of years since any feature update. The very last x30 release x.75 was March 2023, it and the previous were both pretty trivial), there have been 2 x30 betas in that time that have gone nowhere, ie not production released.
BUT having said that DC Rainmaker quotes Garmin as saying the x40 will get some of the non-hardware related updates now (see beta 23.09) and will get updates on going (for a while), so that is positive. Please Garmin all the units need a bigger location on map cursor for those of us with declining eyesight., thanks

There are endurance cycling events that could expire the 1050 battery (24-hour events, etc) but not the 1040.
