Garmin 1040 solar won’t sync via wifi

I typically enjoy using Garmin devices but the 1040 has been a real let down for me. So many issues that are unresolved and this is just another one. I know there is a software update available but I cannot download it via wifi for some reason. Anytime I try to sync via wifi I get Sync Failed. WTH is going on with this device?

  • I always (100%) get “Sync Failed” with Wi-Fi BUT it always actually works, both uploading activities and downloading software updates, “send to device” courses , other files. And the stranger thing is that it always fails if I have installed production software BUT always works (Sync Complete) if I am using BETA software, go figure?  This has been the case for the last 4 or 5 beta/production software cycles. Other users though report real sync fails too.

  • That is very bizarre! I am able to send courses to the device and it does upload but I am not sure whether they are going via my phone as opposed to wireless. The thing about this is, I use a Garmin Forerunner 955 and that performs flawlessly on the same wireless network. I get every update via wifi, syncing takes seconds! In contrast, the 1040 seems like a train wreck.

  • I have the phone BT connection setup but 99% of the time it is disabled so I am certain the updates etc are going via wi-fi

  • Wifi syncing hasn't worked for me for ages now.

Whenever I bring this up with other 1040 users, they all say "well, I'm sure mine is working fine but I'll check anyway," only to come back and say well crap, it is only syncing over BT through my phone.

I really only noticed because syncing used to be so fast that by time I walked down my 20m condo hallway towards my front door after a ride, syncing would already be finished.  Now it can take many many minutes, often longer than it takes for me to get out of my cycling clothes and retire to my den with my phone, out of BT range of my still-trying-to-sync Edge.
