*ucking Garmin update problem again

Garmin destroyed my previous perfectly functioning 530 during a software update I didn’t give permission for ( whilst in the middle of a 4 day remote gravel trip). Funnily enough it was 2 months out of warranty.

Should’ve bought a Wahoo, but bought a 1040. Latest software update , and Garmin is just stuck. Won’t turn off, can’t do a hard reset, same as before, with my 530.
Why aircraft aren’t falling out of the sky, or crashing into mountains, or ships running aground that use Garmin nav devices is beyond me. Any suggestions from the floor, before I speak to someone that can barely speak English to try and resolve this issue.

Can you tell I’m having a bad day?

  • Can you tell I’m having a bad day?

    …it seems so… Scream

  • Support people are even lower than customers on the Garmin management pecking order so no point taking your (understandable) frustrations out on them, I have mostly found they actually want to help. Ring support, calmly and accurately describe your problem and listen to their suggestions and hopefully solutions. And if that does not work rumour has it that you can buy a 1050 next week !!! • It seems like you have an interest in promoting Garmin's business model here. A business model that is based on a kind of forced distribution of new buggy firmware to existing models so that users start longing for the successor. And time and time again the successor will disappoint. The software of each new model always turns out to be a semi-finished/beta product, which does not improve with the many new firmware updates that follow. I have had experience with many Garmin models since the end of the last century, and it tells me that new firmware means the introduction of new functionality, no solution for existing bugs, the introduction of bugs that didn’t exist before, and last but not least, the slowing down of your device. Garmin let us write about these serious software failures without taking any responsibility in reply.

  • >>>Why aircraft aren’t falling out of the sky, or crashing into mountains, or ships running aground<<<

Similar has puzzled me, but the other way around.  How can the same company produce great aviation and marine products but such buggy unreliable Edge products.  It's been the same since the Edge 705 I got in 2010.

Seems you missed the irony and did not read my critical comments in the linked topic which ended with “….shame about the ever worsening software” https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-1040-series/375576/about-to-buy-the-1040/1792828#1792828 Given Garmins inability to fix the serious issues in the 1040/840/540 over the last 2 years / year the very last thing we need is a new hardware/software platform. Typically a new device spells the end of serious work on previous devices, the x40 owners will not be impressed.

  • Sorry for missing your critical comments. I fully agree with you

  • It’s because Garmin flight products have to be tested and approved by international authorities, so they actually do testing on those, rather than sling them half baked at customers like their consumer ranges.

  • I've been a systems engineer and program manager my entire career developing many types of products involving hardware, software, and UIs.  Try as I might, I can't imagine what can be going on in the Edge management and development team.  Of course that's me with a product development point of view.  From the business point of view, they're raking in the dough.

  • Bad bad Garmin. Let us disable your "beta" autoupdates please.

I am going on a month-long bike trip and I am afraid this might happen to me as well.

  • I use RWGPS, download all the routes onto my phone, bought a quad lock ,paid £7 for a months subscription to use the nav facility when you’ve created the route. It worked flawlessly, easier to read too. I was on a 4 day trail route and would’ve been struggling without it.
