What is best way to sync courses from Ride with GPS (RWGPS) and not have goofy elevation data?

Hi there, apologies if this is already discussed (tried searching but can’t seem to find a reasonable thread). I’m relatively new to RWGPS and trying to figure out best way to transfer rides onto my 1040. There seem to be several different ways all producing different results for elevation profiles. The least absolute error (but on the low side) is exporting a .FIT file then importing that to Garmin Connect. I’ve tried using the IQ device app and the direct sync connection from RWGPS, but these are both on the (much) higher side. The direct sync is the worst absolute error at close to 25% - also extra annoying as what is reported in the Garmin App and Garmin Connect is different than what is shown on the 1040 courses screen.

I created a test route that I’ve ridden a lot so have good set of recordings on different bike computers so have a good sense of what the total ascent should be - this also matches almost perfectly when creating the same test route in Strava.

Recorded ascent for 25mile route: ~3200ft

Strava route profile: 3228ft (3238ft on 1040)

RWGPS route profile: 3045ft

- Sync directly to Garmin Connect: 3045ft (4094ft on 1040)

- Export .FIT and import to Garmin Connect: 2687ft (2940ft on 1040)

- IQ Device App: 3799ft on 1040

Taken alone, I can probably live with some amount of variation, but not having WYSIWYG between the Garmin app and the 1040 adds a layer of frustration, particularly when off by 25%.
