Edge 1040 Map unusable

My Edge 1040 is on V21.17

Built in Maps are virtually unusable because of thick black lines eiher side of roads/tracks

Garmin express recently gave me a map update and a FW update

I am going on a cycling holiday to Holland and uploaded openfietsmap BNL to my Edge 1040 and the mapping error is the same on that mapset

This points to the issue being FW related, as discussed in other Garmin forums

Do Garmin never read these forums! This issue will drastically affect my cycling holiday navigation

I have had an issue that edge 1040 is near useless for routing, compared to edge 1000, ridewithgps or any phone router - it often takes you on extra long loops, adds distance and elevation for no reason, regardless of setting of what to avoid, what to prefer, popularity, etc etc.

Do using 3rd party maps help any? Would I keep elevation info?

This is just a workaround. And only works for Windows, not for Mac. So I can't fix this.

Please Garmin, fix this issue asap, as the maps are unusable at this moment.

There is a Mac version of GMapTool https://macdownload.informer.com/gmaptool1/

You can change Typ-file in an .img mapfile using this program. Worth trying?

I fully agree that using a bitmap-only typfile is a workaround. Garmin should not kill the use of thirdparty maps - they'd shoot themselves in the foot if they do.

That software is of 2015 and not compatible with current MacOS versions.

I don't know anything about compatibility of Mac programs for the different generations of MacOS, so I can't tell you if the current Mac Basecamp and MapInstall are compatible nowadays.
In the meantime other people have reported that the bitmap-only version of the 10010.typ file works for all region versions of the OpenFietsMap if you use the TypChanger method (Windows).

Yes! The basemap procedure for MacOS worked, although I had to tweak it a little. I updated the procedure here:

Suppose you have installed the OFM on the Mac in Basecamp.

- Go to the folder where the OFM is installed (most likely ~\library\application support\garmin\maps)

- in Finder, select the file, right-click mouse and choose "Show package content"

- there you will find the original typ-file 10010.typ. Rename this one to 10010.typ.org or whatever

- unzip my bitmap-only typfile (link in the message from _Richi), place the typ-file with the long name into the same OFM install-directory and rename the .typ to 10010.typ

- connect your Garmin 1040 via Usb to your Mac

- Open Garmin Mapinstall and select the area of your choice (OpenFietsMap) and export it to your USB connected 1040. A new img will be created on the Garmin that contains your map.

- make sure you enable this map in your profile settings.

i just want to understand why the shaded relief on the map seems to come and go randomly. it's always shaded on the pause screen map but if i have a map set to one of the data screens it's wildly hit or miss
