Can the Edge x40 computers _read_ HR info from an Apple Watch?

(Yep, this is odd.)

I don't like wearing the HR chest strap for the Garmin monitor which pairs with my ancient Edge 800.  I'd much rather wear my Apple Watch.

Can the Edge x40 series receive HR data from an Apple Watch as tho it were just another BT or ANT+ peripheral (and integrate it with the rest of what's going on)?

  • No, they can't.  Apple doesn't broadcast HR from the watch except to the paired iPhone.  There are AW apps that claim to do this, but I've never got any of them to actually work with my Ultra.  Garmin watches broadcast HR, other manufacturers watches broadcast HR, optical HR bands exist (I have a Scosche) that work fine, but not an Apple Watch

  • The most reliable way is a: Watchlink POD, (or similar) a little pod that you throw in your saddle bag that pairs with the watch and rebroadcasts ANT+. I've used it for years without issue. All the bluetooth apps etc, don't work well as the headunit wants to talk to Garmin Connect at the same time.
