Is it possible to show the map and record a ride on the fly.

Hi I am new to the 1040 and thinking I maybe bought the wrong tool for the job.

I would like to display the map and show my location and record a route I decide to take on the fly.

I normally use my Oregon but I was hoping I could do the same with my new 1040 but it seems the only way is to have a route pre planed.

Thanks in advance

  • You should be able to do what you described. That is a pretty standard thing for any cycling computer with built in maps. Just make sure that the map page is set always display and that you start the timer.

  • Yep, navigation and recording are completely independent.  If you press the start button, it will start recording until you stop and save.  You can pause, and it will pick up recording as soon as you hit start again, as long as you've not yet saved the activity.  This even works if you shut the unit down.  Navigation is its own thing.  You can start/stop change navigation without affecting recording.  I'll often just have the course displayed on the map and follow it without having the unit navigate it.

  • As the others have said, yes.

To ensure it is setup as you want you can change some settings including for the activity profiles, as a video is worth a million words have a look at the VeloGPS 1040 videos, the screen setup one is of general use and while the navigation one does follow a course it has general tips too
