Best practice on syncing Edge1040 over iPhone!? Please advise!

Hi,

this is an issue, that bugs me for years. After a ride I would like to SIMPLY sync my ride with my iPhone 14 pro max and the most recent GarminConnect App on my iPhone so it uploads the activity to Garmin connect. That's all.

Most of the time it does not work seemless. Sometimes it works after 20 minutes of syncing, sometimes it does not sync at all. Sometimes I do have to manually sync it by pressing the sync button in garmin connect.

I just wonder if there is a straight forward way or remedy to do the sync.

I know that I am not alone with this issue, since lots of my ride buddies have the same issue for years with various Garmin devices and mobile phones.

WHAT IS SO DIFFICULTY ON ARANGING A STRAIGHT PUSH OF THE WORKOUT TO THE CLOUD?

I do have the most success with the following:

• stop activty .- not save it.

• switch off iPhone and reboot

• switch off WIFI on iPhone

• start Garmin connect on iphone

• save activity

• wait for a long time - go shower or open a refreshing beverage

40% of the time success of upload

I can't believe that is still the way to sync in 2024…

… rant over… I go cycling now

  • I don't know if you have WI FI where you shower (Home ?)  , but if ....then set the Edge to the same network and it will sync very quickly with Garmin Connect, and you will have it on the phone too when opening the app.  At least that's my experience .

  • I use 1040 and iPhone X until last week and now iPhone 15.
Both Edge and iPhone are in home network as soon I end my ride in front of my home.
Garmin Connect is loaded on iPhone the whole ride (but not in foreground)
    Auto Upload is activated.

    Then:
    -stop the ride and save
-after about 2 minutes a message appears on Edge and iPhone: „your ride is ready to show on Garmin Connect“.

    That‘s it!

  • Thank you for the reply I will try the Wifi sync over the edge and report back

  • Garmin Connect will not sync if you do not have a good cellular connection when away from WiFi.  I don't know why Garmin doesn't allow the Edge to load a ride to the app then sync later if no

Sometimes force closing the app and restarting it will kick start the sync.

  • Same issue on my side, sync after a rides always between 2 to 10 minutes, even with a very good 5G+ signal. (iPhone 12Pro)

I open Garmin Connect, open the device sync, a leave the Edge and the iPhone beside until it's done. If switch to another app, it seems to be longer or to never finish!

  • Tried the WIFI sync in my home network and it did work flawless in less than 2 minutes. GREAT!

I will travel and have to rely one cell service. Hope that goes better now, since I opened this thread :-)

  • I am having this problem as well. I either end my rides at home, where uploads always work over wifi, or at a cafe. Uploading activities and downloading routes does not work reliably at the cafe. My theory is that there are too many Bluetooth devices around.

As a workaround, you can force to upload via Wifi the following way:

    • Turn on Wifi hotspot on your phone
    • Set up phone hotspot on your Garmin
    • Power off the Garmin (long press power + tap power off). This is because it gets stuck trying to upload via Bluetooth and there is no other way to cancel.
    • Disable Bluetooth on your phone (but keep hotspot enabled)
    • Power on Garmin. It should now upload via Wifi.
  • Works perfectly for me lately, I have dedicated SSID for the 2.4Ghz WiFi network in my home. When I end my ride, syncing is almost instantly.

  • I've had a similar problem. Normally when I get back home after a ride, my Edge 1040 Solar syncs quickly with Garmin Connect, presumably over my wifi (the Edge is also connected to my iPhone 14). When I was travelling though, my ride refused to sync at all. I was in a hotel with wifi which had a captive portal (which the Edge doesn't like), so I tried bluetooth without any luck. I also tried connecting to my iPhone wifi hotspot, again without luck. It's possible that the file was too large (it was a 300km audax) but this is rather frustrating as I plan on doing the same each day during an ultra-endurance ride - I will need to rely on bluetooth the whole time. I've tried all the tips here but with no luck, hopefully there is another solution. Thanks!

  • Connecting to the iPhone hotspot should work. Did you enable "maximise compatibility" for the hotspot?

Even if it can connect, it's still possible that it refuses to sync via Wifi while it's already syncing over Bluetooth. In that case, you can use the steps above as a workaround.
