I connected the 1040 to the computer in order to delete the file but everytime that I sync an activity it donwload the update again.

But the answer is Yes.
previously you had to create a dummy GUPDATE.GCD file (an empty text file is enough) and place it in the 1040 Garmin directory, this blocked the download of the real update.
But in recent software versions there is a more elegant solution.
When the update has been downloaded and you are presented with the “Do you want to update now screen”, rather than "Install Now" or "Remind Me" you press the back arrow in the top-left of the screen and the update screen goes away AND is NOT offered again. The real GUPDATE.GCD file blocks further downloads and when you are ready to update go to MENU>System>About, it will have the update (second from top, not the search for update) and press that update option
*note this undocumented feature might disappear at any time but has worked for me many times over the recent versions & betas where I want to download but install later.
