FW 20.19 bug - lost all GPS data in .fit file from long ride when trying to sync to Garmin Connect / sync issues

For starters, I'm on an Edge 1040 Solar running FW 20.19. I finished a long ride today and upon finishing it and saving, it did not seem to transfer to Garmin Connect or my phone. Garmin Connect looked like it kept trying to sync but then would fail. The Edge showed as being actively connected to my phone the whole time, though the sync would only last a second or two then stop. I went into Settings on the Edge and to WifiSync and upon trying to sync there, it kept saying Failed. I eventually rebooted my phone and the Edge 1040 and upon doing so, the sync succeeded, however there was no GPS information for the ride in Garmin Connect. As well, this did not sync the ride to Strava.

I plugged my 1040 into my computer and checked the Garmin\Activities folder and today's fit file was only 7kb. It should have likely been 700+kb as the ride was almost 100km. The history on the 1040 shows the map and data, however I'm guessing that's summary data and not the same as the regular fit file.

I tried a data recovery app and unfortunately was unable to recover any data which is pretty upsetting. This is the first time I've ever experienced this type of issue with a Garmin Edge device in 3+ years. Wondering if anyone else has ever experienced anything similar to this?

I also did a 50km ride a few days ago which didn't automatically sync to Garmin Connect and I had to keep disconnecting the Edge and reconnecting and trying the sync a few times, though that sync eventually worked correctly.

  • Unfortunately I had the exact same thing happen a few weeks ago. It's only a matter of time until it recurs, I fear.

  • Just had the exact same thing happen. No GPS data. 5 of us form the same ride with 1040 solars have lost rides.

  • I've just had the same thing happen to me, lost a 300km ride. I'm very disappointed considering this is a very new Edge 840. I'll be putting in a support ticket.

  • I’ve opened one up but haven’t received any response to the issue. I was ‘reassured’ that it happened only to one ride!

  • I'm on version 21.11 beta now and I haven't experienced this in a while. Unsure if the bug has been resolved or if I've just been lucky but I've probably logged 15 rides since this post and it hasn't happened in three weeks.

    You can sign up for betas (and remove yourself once a stable release comes out) by logging into Garmin Connect on a computer or mobile browser in desktop mode, then tap your device in the upper right corner, select your Edge, and enroll to the beta.
