1040s strange behavior when charging

Hi!

It is true that the autonomy of the 1040 means that it is not often plugged into an outlet to recharge it, but as soon as it has to be done, the charging process is a bizarre affair where the 1040 never behaves the same .
I would like to point out that I always use the famous "special" Garmin cable...

Yesterday the 1040 was at 20%, so I decided to recharge it under supervision.
I plug it in, it turns on directly and arrives at the home page, I turn it off, and it restarts instantly, annoyed, I put it to load on the computer, there it cuts off and arrives at the page where the battery % is indicated.
Half an hour later it is at 22%, I unplug it, turn it back on, and it remains stuck loading the cards, I wait 5 long minutes, still stuck, so I decide to press the button for a long time power, it restarts and surprise, it is no longer at 22% it is at 35% battery capacity.
I decide to continue charging on the adapter, I plug it in, the GPS starts, I decide to continue charging with the screen on even if I don't like it, and I notice that the little battery icon with it lights up indicating When the charging process is started, this little light just turns on and off, this lasted about 15 seconds, then it stopped and the little light remained displayed.
1 hour later, the 1040 was at 37%, or 2% more, I decided to unplug the adapter and plug it back in 30 seconds later, and there instantly I saw the charge indication in the menu go from 37% to 85 %.
So I understand that the 1040 charges, but why on earth does the battery % refresh not happen instantly like my edge 830? And why has Garmin after all these updates still not found a solution to keep the GPS off after connecting it to an adapter? and also display the % of charge with a refresh every 1% like any device that needs to be recharged? My FR945 and my edge 830 work like this, why doesn't the 1040 do it!!!!!

Finally, I leave the 1040 charging in the evening, hoping that it is at 100% because it is impossible to check it without refreshing, even with the screen on.
And strange thing before going to bed the 1040 was off, I unplugged it, tried to turn it on, the GPS did not turn on, I pressed the power button several times, the 1040 decided not to turn on anymore and remains on a perfectly blank screen.
So I press the power button for a long time, at least 20 seconds, and miraculously he wakes up from his coma at 99% battery, not 100%, this 1040s is a joke!

Am I the only one who has such weird behavior when loading the 1040?

  • Am I the only one who has such weird behavior when loading the 1040?

I don't know if you're the only one, but your behavior certainly doesn't apply to everyone. At least not to me.

When I charge my 1040 (not solar) at the socket, it switches itself on. I switch it off and then the dark screen shows the charge status. This changes constantly and is up to date. My device also charges up to 100% - although I don't normally do this.

Never have to press the on button to force booting after a charge…

  • Mine turns on when plugged in to charge, so I just leave it on.  I can swipe down and see the battery level if needed.  When I remove the power cord, it stays on so I turn it off.   When connected to a PC, it goes into storage mode and then boots up when I disconnect it, after which I power it off.  A problem can occur while charging connected to a PC if the PC turns off the power when it goes to sleep. The Edge will boot up and stay on, which will slowly discharge the battery.  This is all normal behavior, if not what many consider optimal

99% is close enough to 100 for me.  It doesn't take much time reach 99% from being at 100%.

  • Hi,

Following your messages, I decided to do a factory reset which I had not done for some time and to get off to a good start with the latest fw 20.19
The 1040 has returned to normal behavior, no micro-cuts at the start of charging and I can turn off the 1040 and see the battery % increase during charging.

    Thank you!

    The cable isn’t special.

It is a data/charging cable. You need a data cable if you plug it into a computer. If you are just charging, a charging-only cable will work.

If you call Garmin for support, they might ask you if you are using the Garmin-labeled one since they can be certain that cable will be a data/charging cable.

  • It was a touch of humor,
Because my first edge 1040 burned at the USB-C connector, and I was told to use the Garmin cable, hence the mention "special Garmin cable" ;-)

  • It’s been a myth for many years.

There was an issue about 10 years ago with the quality of USB C cables ( https://www.pcworld.com/article/1063892/we-tested-43-old-usb-c-to-usb-a-cables-1-was-great-10-were-dangerous.html ). But even that doesn’t make the Garmin one special.

Garmin has no idea whether not somebody is using anything like the right cable unless they are using the Garmin-labeled one.

It’s fairly common that people have problems because they are using a charging only cable (it’s not like you can see a difference; some people have no idea there is a difference). The Garmin-labeled cables reduce support headaches for Garmin. But Garmin asking people to use it suggests the cable is special.
