Problems with Power bank charging Edge 1040

Hello,

I ran into issues charging my Edge 1040 with powerbanks. While it works as a charm on computer or with wall plugs, if I plus it on USB from a power bank it just blink like if i was switching the power on and off very fast. Chaqrging/not charging/charging/not charging ...

I tried on 6 different power banks, same issue, no matter if I use the original Garmin cable or others, tried on both output, 1A and 2A ...

Anyone having the same issue and a walkaround?

  • The 1040 has a relatively small battery (compared with phones, ipads, etc that powerbanks are typically intended to charge).

A small battery draws relatively little current to charge, especially once the battery goes over 80% charge and charging slows to a trickle. I think the 1040 has something like a 350mAh - assuming a charge time of about 100 minutes, this means the 1040 will probably draw less than 0.5 A at its fastest, and closer to 0.1 A when near full.

Many powerbanks have an automatic cut-off at low current levels, to prevent a device draining the powerbank when already fully charged. I suspect that the small 1040 battery is triggering this cut-off. Mains USB or computers aren't concerned with power drain, so typically don't have this cut-off.

Charging the 1040 when it has <80% battery (and therefore is drawing more current) may avoid the cutoff limits. Alternatively, using a smaller powerbank intended for smaller devices may have a lower cut-off current.
