Transfer waypoints to Edge 1040 without USB-cable

Is there a way to transfer (or synchronize) waypoints to/from an Edge 1040 wireless using a smartphone?

Currently I use Basecamp on my Windows-computer and transfer the waypoints over a USB-cable-connection: not possible while on a bike-tour.

Couldn't find anything in the Garmin Connect app.

I looked at the Connect-IQ app "SendPoints", found this app not usable for me.

Unfortunately Edge 1040 does not support  the Garmin Explore app, which would provide waypoint-synchronization.

Any ideas?

  • GRouteLoader App can achieve

  • Thank you tjj, but not what I am looking for.

It's only possible to receive a single waypoint manually entered on the sendpoint.us website.

    Or did I miss something?

If you have the gpx tcx etc. file ready. then you first send it to the Garmin Connect smartphone application and save it there. Then you select this route in Garmin Connect and send it to Edge 1040 and synchronize it.
If you do not have a ready route, you need to create it, e.g. in Mapy.cz and save it as a gpx file. The rest is as above. Remember that Edge 1040 synchronizes the route after you turn it on.

  • Hi Tomek: I prepared a GPX-file with 1 route and 2 waypoints. Imported it to Garmin Connect and sent it to the Edge.

==> the route has been transfered to the device, but the waypoints vanished

  • Where are you getting the waypoints/locations from?

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this (which doesn't make too much sense).

(GRouteLoader can do it but it needs to have the other side create the right sort of files, which only my GRouteLoader Windows program creates.)

  • Waypoints are stored in GPX-files.

I found out that the ConnectIQ-App IQMapReceiver together with the matching Android app can send waypoints from a GPX-file to the Edge 1040.

This works OK, but I can only send the waypoints (not receive), it's also pretty complicated.

Is there really no way to send/receive waypoints without 3rd-party apps?

It would require an app on the phone or a website. And a corresponding IQ app.
