Power drops using 1040 with Kickr 4

I have my kickr 18 connected to my 1040. I have noticed on my Garmin 1040 that the power numbers drop off continuously for a second. They come back but then keep dropping off. I am not sure why this has started. Are you able to help with solving this issue? I have attached the screenshot from workout yesterday. Any thoughts why there are power drops to the Garmin 1040 would be great.

  • what i always recomend: unpair the Kickr as indoor trainer from Edge, pair it only as power sensor, and control it via Wahoo app or with other apps via BT.

the 2.4ghz wifi channel <-> ant+ freq collosion could be a problem source also, so check wifi router what channel is used in the 2.4GHz mode (do not use auto setting, set it manually to a low channel , between 1-4 is good. but the best is the 5GHz wifi, without 2.4Ghz mode, then there is no interference)

  • thank you I tried your suggestion yesterday and it worked great!! I actually recorded with my Epix2 but suspect it will also work with my 1040, will try this afternoon. So I unpaired the kickr as a trainer and repaired as just power source. I then used the Wahoo app as the controllable source and PERFECT! see attached no drops. so will do the same with 1040 today and report back. if this is the solution do you have any suggestion on gettin my workouts to a controllable source as I usually use erg mode and let the trainer change the resistance?

  • on Win Pc: Golden Cheetah, it can control your Kickr via BT or ANT+ too (if you have inbuilt BT or BT and/or ANT+ stick). it is free app, so i started with it Slight smile

on mobile or tablet: TrainerDay, TrainerRoad, Zwift for example, but these are not free (i use Zwift with Win PC and ANT+ stick but in the early days in my cycling life i used the GCheetah and watched those graphs and numbers only Joy. )Usually these device use the BT FTMS protocol so no need ANT stick or similar

i am not familiar with Wahoo Systm , i suppose that works also.

and all of above mentioned apps have trial versions (7-14 days mostly), so if you will try them one by one, the spring is already here Slight smile

  • I am experiencing the same problem with Tacx Flow Smart. If this was external interference, then why would the recording be fine? It looks to me like the control interferes with the measurement. I don't think this was a problem when I was indoor training last winter :-(

  • Yes, my (Garmin) Tacx Flow and (Garmin) Tacx Flux have become almost unusable while “controlled” by my Garmin 1040 via ANT+, you would think products from the same company might work well together?

I could put up with the power dropouts, speed drops too but not as much and cadence never seems to drop. But worse is that the connection to the resistance control goes AWOL, I then get a “Trainer Connected” notification but from that point the resistance change stops. If the disconnect occurred going uphill then after the summit it never releases but continues high on the downhill. If the disconnect was on a downhill it will continue easy on the next uphill. The only fix is to manually disconnect / re-connect the Trainer via the sensor screen and then it actually controls again, until next disconnect.

Never happens if Tacx Training App is controlling via Bluetooth, control and all metrics are perfect.

Fix this please Garmin, I reckon it has got worse in recent versions (I also still get this with 20.x betas, currently 20.11), several control disconnects in a 10-20km follow course.

PS I have phone & wi-fi connections on 1040 disabled, I have no wi-fi or Bluetooth devices (under my control) enabled anywhere near the trainer

  • Hello, if you are experiencing dropouts on an Edge controlling a trainer via ANT+, please send me a direct message referencing this thread. Please let me know what kind of trainer and Edge you have. Thank you!

  • thank you will give the Zwift a go! thank you

  • hi Former Member yes I was experiecing the drop outs as explained in my orig post. Folllowed the steps provided by and now it is resolved.

My trainer is Wahoo Kickr 4 and device is edge 1040 (non solar). I will send you DM of the same. Cheers

Of course Luko79’s solution is to not use ANT+ and therefore not to use the Edge, but to use another controlling app via Bluetooth.  I also have done this and no dropouts at all occur. Downside of this is that I have a $1000 device that I can’t use with my $1000+ indoor trainers AND if I want to follow GPX courses on my trainer I have to pay Garmin another couple of hundred dollars per year for a Tacx Premium subscription, some people might think this is why the ANT  problem is not fixed?

I have almost finished writing up a description of the issue with example rides, fit & ANT Rx/Tx logs that I will put on the beta forum as all my recent testing has been with 20.x betas.
