Edge 1040 Solar - Power Meter values reported are wrong [19.22 Firmware]

Good morning,

I have noticed some issues, possibly related to the new firmware upgrade of my Edge 1040 Solar.

I do have the SRAM Red AXS eTap system which is using the standard dual-sided crank power meter from QUARQ.

I can link the power meter to the Edge, however the first problem is that whenever I calibrate it before each ride, I get a wrong minus 5 digits value (like -32876Nm), then during the ride itself, sometimes the Edge is reporting erratic values mainly wrong like pulling 1500 Watts in a situation where I should have 200/250 W.

Anyone experienced a similar problem? If so, how did you get it sorted?

Thanks a mill

Marco

  • I have the same situation but version 20.09...

I thought it was my Quarq XX1 AXS that was broken, but now I saw the topic and the problem is very similar, I don't know if it's the Garmin or PowerMeter...
On "assioma" pedals, everything is impeccable.

  • Hi,

did you open a request with Garmin Support?

I believe this is not a power meter issue, there probably something between the Edge and PM not read correctly by the cycling computer.

  • pls share a fit file here (in zip format)

but what you can try in such a case: remove all the sensors and repair everything. i assume you use your Quarq via ANT+ with Edge.

but the Edge only receive values what the powermeter sends power, so something is in the Quarq wrong imho (if the zero calibration gives you back a totally different number than before, that is the sign that the powermeter is faulty.) try to make zero offset via AXS app, check the value there also, if there it is good 5 times in a row, go to the Edge, do it with that also (probably the repeat button  wont work in the calibration menu, so you need to go out and go in again into the calibration menu)

  • Not sure how to attach the fit file on the open discussion, I will try to follow the AXS suggestions and let you know

  • Hi Fabio,

I can see some "nonsense" power spikes being recorded from your ride, and at the same time it looks like you had some breaks where no power was recorded whatsoever.

See mine, I have highlighted with the black arrows either the erratic power recorded and also the blank space with no recording at all.

Now, the overall average power recorded after my ride was not to far from the one I usually got in normal situation (with correct calibration values, and no erratic measurements), however, the current final value I am getting now it cannot be accurate since it takes into account erratic values, pauses (with no recordings) and wrong calibration...

    It's a disaster!

  • I think it's a problem with the potentiometer (Quarq XX1), the Garmin GPS shouldn't be to blame, right? Especially because the Sram APP sometimes gave absurd values when calibrating.

  • Well, we are here to find out a solution not to blame ;) I do not have now with me another cycling computer (Wahoo or another Edge), it would have been useful to check the behavior of the power meter readings using another GPS.

That said, are you running on the latest Edge firmware version?

  • At the time of the photos sent it was on 20.09, now it has been updated to 20.11 but I haven't tried it yet.
Next training I will go with my old Edge 820 to check.
