VO2 Max and training status.

I'm using a 1040 for most rides, sometimes use my fenix 6 for trainer sessions. I've found there is alot of inconsistencies recently, esp with VO2Max.   Recently,  the graph on both devices stopped giving that line and the calculation seems to have stalled at the same number.

My FTP has improved and my weight has dropped - to me that would indicate that the number should shift, right?
Also my acute load is high, and my load focus is high Aerobic (and within optimal ranges for the other two sections), HRV is within normal range, but I'm in recovery training status?

is there a way to "reset this"

  • i have the same "stalled" (it is increasing but very very slowly, maybe with 0.1 or 0.05 values per day) but the VO2Max number is ok in my case (i use FR965 and 840), it is same as i calculate from the (6min maxavgPower*10.8 / bodyweight in kg ) + 7 formula . i assume it estimates the "labor VO2Max" and that is not changing, that comes from genetics. the older x30 series units moves up and down even 10 values and gives heavily overestimated VO2Max (in my case 67-68 from 840 what is real, and the x30 gave me 70 as starting number at the beginning of a training block and ->79 at the end with the same data, but i knew that is impossible).

Lots of people is complaining about it, nobody likes to "lose" VO2Max or watts (only kgs :D), but they dont know their real VO2MAx from labtest or proper outdoor test from 6min max effort. if the x40 would give higher VO2Max than the older units in the past, the forum section would be empty :D

Probably your chronic load is higher than the acute, and this is why it gives you still recovery (usually it happens if you had a harder training block, and a rest week, and after the rest week you start to train, 1,2,3 days , /maybe with not so hard workouts/, but it is still not enough load for your body to reach the previous effect what the harder training block made)

  • Thanks Luko. Thats interesting that the calculation may be done differently on different devices.

I must admit, I was expecting a drop after I took three months off after overreaching on an multi-day thing....

I upgraded my 530 for a 1040 for a bit of motivation and seen the drop (from 52 to 49) but figured after losing the extra 4kg and a few threshold sessions I would see significant increases. Its now slowly rising to 50, and showing a positive trend.

Although unlikely, I wonder if the fenix inherits the VO2Max calculation from the 1040? They certainly seem to align, but my attempt to "cheat" and use the fenix to get back to my old numbers has failed!!

Today, the range in the graph is back to normal, and I can see the slight increases over the last 4 weeks. (that align to your comments) The training status has returned to productive after a day off - and yes I had an easier week last week.

Chapeu on your numbers btw - many years ago when I considered myself fit, I was tested at the labs in Loughborough, still not close to yours!

    Cheers,

    Mike
