Follow a Course not working correctly

I have a brand new Garmin 1040 Solar and have a few issues I am trying to iron out.

I am in the thick of Winter and ride indoors, I use Zwift and like to do other things to break the monotony of indoor training, so I like the "Follow a Course" option on my Garmin 1040 Solar. I have it paired with a Wahoo Kickr v5 ... both are up to date and the trainer is paired as a smart trainer, no other connections are established.

I select "Follow a Course" and load a favorite course that I created in Garmin Connect and start riding, I get to a hill that is around a 6-10% gradient and there is no change in resistance on the trainer. I then tried to manually adjust it, same outcome. So I am essentially just spinning at this point.

I also have 1030, it is the same connection and the "Follow a Route" function works perfectly, I, unfortunately, sold it a week ago.

I have spent a lot of time troubleshooting all I can from Wahoo's side and everything is functioning properly there.

Do you feel resistance change on the course up to the hill, have you tried different  courses or the this course multiple times. I observe disconnects between my 1040 and smart trainer which appear to cause the 1040 to stop changing resistance, it seems to be stuck on the last resistance level before the disconnect, it never seems to recover until I manually disable & re-enable the trainer in the sensors list. If the disconnect was while going uphill then following downhill resistance remains high, if disconnect was on level or downhill then following hills are easy. Do you see something similar? I am putting together description of the problem and log files so Garmin might review it?

ps There are lots of reports of dropouts of sensor readouts and I see a few of those but the above is between the 1040 and the resistance control of the smart trainer leading to loss of resistance control. Are you using the 19.22 software version or the current beta 20.09
