Priority power source when using edge 1040, v3 pedals and tacx vortex trainer

Hi there! I have edge 1040, v3 pedals and tacx vortex trainer. 2 questions about priority power source. When doing planned structured workout when 1040 controls trainer: 1. Where 1040 take power data from: v3 or vortex? 2. Based on what power source it controls trainer and is there a way to change priority power source?

  • as i know, the edge will control your vortex and will adjust the resistance to its "watts" (yes, i know how inaccurate a vortex, this is why i put "" :) ). but if the V3 is also paired to the Edge, on the workout screen you will see the V3s watts (but 100% that under the target power, due to the big power measure difference between the vortex and v3.) so you need to adjust (increase) on-the-fly the target (vortex) power to get the v3's power at the requested power target. Yes, it is painful, the Zwift and TrainerRoad can do powermatch so with these apps you dont need adjust nothing on-the-fly, the apps are monitoring the difference in the background between the 2 power sources continously and auto-adjusting it.

  • Luko, first of all - thank you very much for your reply!

At first I thought that - based on what you described - it should not be an issue, coz anyway correct data from pedals being stored in workout.

But then I tried another training and realized that since vortex see more power than in real it actually releases resistance when I get to "target" while real target (by v3) not even achieved.

So far the only free solution I found is to artificially rase FTP in TP, so trainer not releases resistance too early and I can show target power on pedals in structured workouts (paid solution is zwift)

  • yes, You can increase your indoor FTP by X watts , the only problem is that the Vortex has temperature drift, so the power difference is not a constant value, a bit less with cold unit (on the beginSlight smilening the ride) and getting bigger and bigger as the time goes by and the vortex gets warmer and warmer. but with a small luck You can determine the X value as average difference. good luck!
