Startup.txt message on Edge 1040

When will the problem with displaying the message in startup.txt be resolved on Garmin Edge 1040? I have version 19.22 on my device.

I had the Edge 1030 previously and it worked fine. I cannot believe that the software would have changed for this function so it cannot be difficult to correct!

  • Have your tried powering the unit of and then on rather than using suspend/sleep mode?

  • Yippee! mcinner1, you have solved it, much obliged.

I have a message in English, French and Italian. The French has accents on e and a. On removing the accents the message wonderfully appears. Therefore, Garmin need to reinstall the character sets for those languages with accents to properly resolve this bug.

  • Yes, I can confirm this, if I add the characters üé to the startup.txt on my Edge 1040 it doesn't show the message anymore. Weird that this still a problem in 2024.

  • Must be galling for those people whose languages require accents when using Garmin. I had to revamp my French message to make to grammatically correct without accents!

  • Little bit off topic - but shows how Garmin „improves“ the software from device generation to device generation:

Edge 1030: startup.txt shows special characters like ü, é without problems
Edge 1030 plus: startup.txt shows special characters like ü, é as „?“ - but shows the message
Edge 1040: startup.txt does not show the message if a special character is in
    Joy

  • At one time (v14.20), the startup.txt file could contain and properly display emoji's as I had Bicyclist tone2‍ shown. Somewhere along the line, that ability was broken. Removing the emoji allows the startup message to be displayed.

  • The 1040 used to show emojis within startup.txt. Something changed. It was identified and we've heard nothing from Garmin on this. (Another example where this beta group could really do with an overhaul in communication/transparency)

  • Thank you all for participating in the thread. We are aware and working on a fix!

  • Over the last 10+ years I have used an Edge 200, 510, 520, 530, 1040. Up to the 520 the software / features would get better and better, more stable, less bugs with each release, I really loved that 520. The 530 was/is great hardware but the software sometimes had issues, some would get fixed but later get un-fixed, features would appear and next release disappear never to return. Bit over a year ago I had a big birthday (with a zero at the end) coming up and I figured I deserved a grown up Edge with a touch interface and a BIG screen, wouldn't that be great.but while the 1040 hardware is a marvel the software just gets worse and worse? Someone should really find out why. Ps In my very very long IT experience I found that most developers, testers, support people wanted to produce a great product they would be proud of but sometimes management did not share their ambition.

  • Fixed in beta 20.11
