Why won't routes calculate turn by turn directions on 1040 that my 1030 would?

I have several routes in Strava that I've used on my previous 1030.  Load the same strava routes onto my 1040 and I can't get turn by turn directions. If I select "navigation" from the main screen on 1040 and then select a course...then hit the three dots in the upper right....it tells me Route Calculation "Not Cached."  How do I resolve that?  It doesn't make sense that the 1030 would give me turn by turn directions for the same synced strava route but the 1040 won't. Of note, I also can't display anything but MTB trails and MAJOR roads/highways.  Never had an issue with seeing all streets on the 1030, but can't see most streets on the 1040.  Maybe that is the root issue that I also cannot solve?

  • Did you check if you have the map of your area acivated?

  • I did.  In the US so I have Garmin Cycle MAP NA 2023.10 Canada/Alaska enabled.  Also have Garmin Cycle Map NA, Middle America 2023.10.  I disabled all other maps, mostly EU, Africa, and Asia maps.

With some more poking around last night I noticed two things:

    1. when booting up i get a momentary message saying "unable to verify basemap version" or something like that.  It is only on the for a second or so.

    2.  I'm presently on the central coast of California.  All I can see is trailforks trails/poi unless I really zoom out...then I can see streets/roads/highways in Mexico...which I can move the map over to and then get really good detailed street maps for cities and town in Mexico.

So it seems to me there is a basemap issue - but I can't find anything to help me resolve.  I actually traded in my 1030 since Garmin tech support came to the conclusion I needed to send it in for repair since it would not connect to a computer. I'd been thinking I'd upgrade to the 1040 solar in the coming spring/summer and they offered a 20% coupon on the 1040 solar if I shipped in my 1030.  Have had it a month or two and didn't notice the maps issue as all of my rides have been mountain bike trails on trail systems I know.  Getting ready to start commuting by bike again in a couple of weeks in areas that I don't know well...and noticed the issue.

  • I also did a factory reset of the 1040 and nothing changed...except all of my exsting data fields for my ride profiles were gone.

  • Did you already connect to Garmin Express to check all your Maps? Maybe re-install the North America map?

can you share a screenshot of the screen where you select the active maps on your device?

  • I did.  Ended up entering Garmin support chat and they suggested reloading NA maps.  I did not realize the blue font "Map Details" text for the Edge in Garmin Connect was a hyperlink that gave you the option to reload maps.  I now see streets and roads in the US.

Now to see how to reload all of my previous routes that disappeared after the reset to default settings.

  • Good that that worked. Do you Sync your device with Garmin Connect? That would show you the routes you drove before and you can always re-send them to your device

  • Thanks.  I do and did.  Tried syncing garmin connect several times.  Gave up and instead un-stared and then re-stared routes in Strava that I'll use in near future.  Following that and another sync and the are on the device now...and it appears as though turn by turn is now available.

  • Using Stava was smart to do, happy for you everything is working again!

  • If you loaded several (many?) routes at once to the 1040 it takes significant time to calculate the turn-by-turn data in the background and store them in cache (2 folders). So that may explain you did not see directly the cached status. Second of course is that a map has to be active for your area as @6046281 indicated already.
