Garmin 1040 Solar - Micro Drops in Power in structured workout on Kickr

Hi All,

Just received and updated my 1040 Solar to the latest firmware. I used it for the first time last night with a structured ride. It is connected to my Kickr (v5) and was consistently having micro drops in power. I have used this Kickr on Zwift and have never had an issue like this. HR, speed, and cadence never dropped. I only have my Kickr and HR monitor connected to the 1040. All of my equipment is updated, I assume the connection was using Bluetooth, but I have yet to try it again using ANT+.

Here is a screenshot of my 1040 micro-dropping power, you can see it is just the power dropping, resistance stayed the same the whole workout.

Here is a sample workout with my trainer using Zwift, the trainer is not dropping power once. I doubt it is my Kickr.

Is this a known issue? Pretty annoying to look at and frustrating to see my 3-second power constantly drop to 0 during the workout.

Any troubleshooting advice outside of trying ANT+ instead of Bluetooth?

  • dont use the 1040 (or any x40 model) for trainer control, this is my advice. they made it unusable since a few months. control it via Wahoo app or any other app/sw via BT or ANT+. or use an older Edge (the x30 series is STILL working Slight smile)

  • there is no BT (FTMS) control in the Garmin devices so You could only control it via ANT+ (FE-C)

  • Same here. But I'm using a Concept2 BikeErg.

  • That’s not an excuse from Garmin. They have to fix this experience. Especially with this unit having a $750 price tag.

  • Unfortunate. This really sucks because I want to have better power data, these micro dips drop average power and normalized power significantly

  • i know but this is the situation right now. they are struggling to find a solution (which works for everybody and not causing more problems after solving one.).

  • In my limited experience (Tacx Flow & Tacx Flux) controlled via Garmin 530 & 1040 (both ANT+ FE-C) or controlled via Tacx Training App (BT FTMS) the TTA is a far far better ride experience, no dropouts, much better approximation (speed up & down hill) to my outdoor experience of the same route (and what the power vs speed for grade calculators say), and the gameification of downhill speed is nice. The Garmins make the resistance mostly feel like riding through mud. I have never done Zwifting or other but people tell me the experience is closer to than using the TTA than the sluggish edges.

Garmin could improve the situation by borrowing the TTA code and implement BT FTMS on the Edges (which have the better graphics IMO

  • these 2 trainers are not the best products of Tacx, unfortunately... the FE-C is also ok with Neo if the control device is good (a computer with quality ANT+ stick for example ), yes , the BT has a bit better error correction so if the enviroment is too noisy by 2.4GHz signals then the BT is better choice. Yes, if they would implement the BT FTMS into the Edge/FR/Fenix series the life would be easier for everyone...

  •  have you tried this suggestion from Luko79? I am also experiecing drops on my 1040 but I am also using the 1040 to control the kickr for erg mode etc.

  • I haven’t. I just went back to Zwift. I got too frustrated with this issue. I’ll try again with a short 15 minute workout.
