Edge 1040 is stolen - can it be blocked for further use?

Yesterday my bike including Edge 1040 was stolen. Is there a way to block the device for further use so that it's no longer of value? And if so, where can I find it? And if not, would that not be a valuable new feature?

The same question ges for the 2 other devices which have been stolen, ie. Rally XCs and Varia RTL515.

  • Thanks, yet this for information inquiry from public authorities, rather than providing the ability to block the device, especially from a user perspective. Though I have a police report on the delict, I cannot block the device.

The link moreover suggests that it is not possible to block the device, hence I guess it's a useful enhancement. Or do I see this differently?

  • it's a useful enhancement

The way the device works now, there is no way to communicate with it, once it has left your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth range. Unlike your smartphone, that has remote wipe and lock ability. You can request this for future devices, but it can't be added to the current Edge lineup. - Share Ideas | Garmin

  • The device has a burned in unique ID.

Several things Garmin could do fairly easily to make it harder for the "fell off the truck" ebay or right out stolen devices.

    A few suggestions:

    1. upon proof of purchase or prior garmin connect use showing a certain serial number, watch for any future activity of said serial number. then report to police (not to the originsl owner) to go after it.

    2. once police shows they dont give a damn, send a question to the user of stolen property. offer a discount for him to buy his own, and return the stolen to first owner.

    3. refuse files from stolen unit, no connect connectivity, no livetrack no updstes etc etc.  updates could carry a blacklisted serial table, either refuse updates or disable the unit altogether.

actually instead of disabling, just leave it at current firmware, it is more irritating that way, thief has to endure lost data, reboots, etc etc   :-)

So sure, lots of things can be done.  What's in for Garmin, though?  That's why it won't happen, I think.

  • I feel for Koen1805, I'd hate to see my Rallies stolen :-( Probably even more than my bug-ridden Edge ;-)

I am surprised that Garmin is not making it difficult to resell stolen devices. They should prefer to sell new devices at full price instead. What I think could easily be done is letting users take ownership of devices by their serial number. Then no other user should be allowed to add the device to their Garmin Connect unless the previous owner releases the ownership. This would make it much more difficult to sell stolen devices and interest in stealing those would drop. Of course this would add to the risk of buying used devices, but you can already get a bricked device today, so I don't think it's major.
