Best practice Edge 1040 and Garmin watch (Forerunner 955)

I've just upgraded from an Edge 530 to an Edge 1040, and already own a Forerunner 955. The 955 has been great, the 530 suffered crashes and sensor dropouts quite a bit, too early to tell what the 1040 will be like.

I like to record a ride on both devices when I'm out cycling. With the 530 and Forerunner 955, best practice seemed to be to just delete the 530 ride (or, more likely, not save it).

I was hoping that, with Unified Training Status (and Physio TrueUp) on both the 955 and 1040 (it wasn't a feature on the 530) things would be different. In a perfect world recording the same ride on two devices at the same time would result in just one entry in Garmin Connect. However, I'm still getting two rides, double the mileage etc etc.

Can someone confirm this is the correct behaviour? If so, I guess I'm back to deleting one of the rides manually?

My 955 is set as the primary device and primary wearable.

Thanks everyone.

  • That's great. The last time I checked was a month ago. Hopefully, they fixed it.

The example I saw last month:

--Active Calories from the activity == 792

--Daily Active Calories in the report == 560

The report has calories for the entire day, including movements it passively tracks. On days where I record and discard, the report showed that active calories are a few hundred calories greater than the active calories reported from the ride alone.

At some point, I'll check again and note the active calories in the report just before and just after my ride.

  • I did a quick indoor test ride and confirmed that it is still incorrect for me. Record ride on Edge, wear watch but don’t track the activity on watch.

Active calories immediately before my ride 676 (Garmin Connect and Watch)
Active calories recorded from the ride 164 (shown in the activity on GC)
Active calories after ride 757 (Garmin Connect and Watch)

So Garmin Connect shows an increase of 81 active calories rather than 164. The only diverges further, the longer and more intense I ride.

  • It's January 2024. I have Forerunner 955 Solar and new Edge 1040. When I start cycling training on Edge 1040, after training in Connect: Body Battery does not drop - there is stress from the watch or when the watch is removed (when I train in the morning without the watch, after a few hours on the bike it still is max Body Battery). It does not provide or count calories in Connect - but e.g. it transfers them correctly to MyFitnessPal. There is no HR graph from training in "Heart Rate". In the case of "intense activity minutes", training is visible. The rest of the data is ok. There is a bug in Garmin and when Edge is training (even if Edge is set as the main device) it does not send all the information to the system. This is an error because it does not set Edge as the primary device in all parameters.
