Rant to Garmin

Garmin is making fun of us with GPS devices with programmed software obsolescence, incompatibilities with so-called old watches, and firmware bugs that never end with updates...
I'm a very good Garmin customer with lots of sensors, watches and edge, I left a good bunch of euros/dollars, but the straw will break the camel's back if it continues like this.
These recent Garmin devices are no longer even capable of giving the minimum to cyclists, training without worrying about bugs, navigating without worrying about bugs, displaying their sensors without worrying about disconnection, seeing their consistent elevation even in wet weather, instead Garmin adds crappy features, Stamina, GroupeRide, photo on the edge, instant messaging
But finally Garmin are you losing your mind or what???!!!
We don't want Facebook on our GPS! We want to take full advantage of GPS navigation and outdoor sports training tools, safely with our Varia lighting!!!!!!
The 1040 is not even capable of functioning correctly after more than a year on the market!!!
It's unimaginable to have invested 700 euros for a tool that only interferes with your bike rides and training.

  • I make a critical post HERE before 24 days and no one answered.

  • Listen, I am all for a critical approach with Garmin. They have a lot of devices with a lot of bugs. I had an Edge 500 that was bug free. Then an Edge 810 that was one of the buggiest devices I've ever owned. And I've had to use the Garmin Explore web site which might have some of the worst UX issues I've ever seen.

But the Edge 530 I had, and now the 1040 I use have been absolutely rock solid reliable. I have never had a navigation issue, I've had no major sensor connection issues (and I use a lot of sensors, I even have a Tempe for goodness sake), it has just worked from day 1 through all of their updates.

A few things of note, for starters, when you say "consistent elevation even in wet weather" are you referring to the barometric altimeter? Based on the physics of how they work they are affected by changes in weather. They're measuring pressure, and when the weather changes, the pressure changes. There is nothing you can do about that unless you want your Edge to be a weather altering device. Not sure Garmin's engineers are capable of that just yet.

Do you have specific sensors that are having issues? I don't work at Garmin, but when you make a vague rant, there isn't anything to be addressed. To say that the 1040 is "not even capable of functioning" just isn't true. I use it all the time and have no issues - none navigating, no connection issues with power meter/cadence sensor, speed sensor, heart rate monitor,  and tempe sensor. Zero dropouts. Can't remember the last time I had one.

But people might be able to help you if you provide some specific details about your issues.

  • Agree, fix the fundamental operation of the device before adding eye candy.

  • Garmin could start fixing stupid bugs, like that pop-up click through and do not consume the event.

E.g. i get an pop-up (light disconnected, etc.) while on the pause screen, when I want to confirm and dismiss this pop-up and touch it, I will save my current activity if I touch at to "wrong" place.
Without QA you will have crappy products, no matter how brilliant your PMs, designers, engineers are.

  • I agree. My 1040 is generally rock solid and I really like it, but those popups are an abomination.
