Inaccurate Ascent and Elevation Data: How to keep water out of Barometric Altimeter Sensor?

Did a ride yesterday for 3 hours during a light rainy evening. My new Edge 1040 only accumulated approx 100 feet of my last 550 feet of climbing. (3900 ft total for Edge). I was also recording with my $250 Garmin Instict 2 watch which recorded 4486 ft vs Strava 4445 ft. The Edge 1040 vs Instinct 2 are usually within 1-3% of each other and within 5% of Strava. Yesterday, the watch recorded all the final climbs and descents whereas the Edge only didn't. The Edge was front mounted. Garmin support says I must have gotten water in the port. According to other Edge forums, this has been a longstanding issue for years but was supposedly fixed in the 1030?

Anyone have a solution to keep water and/or dust out of the sensor port?

(Note: I also find it odd the watch has behaved flawlessly for me over 6 months whereas a top of the line Edge underperorms.  I also had an issue with water in the start/stop button, making it impossible to end the activity! After 3 weeks, I'm thinking I should have kept the Karoo 2)

  • Never had this issue myself on either 1030 or 1040 (or even 800 and 1000). But first I’ve always got silicone covers for mine. These cover the buttons but not port for sensor. Second in winter / wet weather I tend to ride a bike with mudguards. Whenever I’ve been caught in bad weather on a none mudguard bike I notice a large amount of water comes off the front wheel, right into where the Garmin and the sensor hole is positioned.

So sorry, probably not a big help but may explain why I don’t see the issues others do.
