Show data screen only when navigation is active?

Option 1   Add another data screen to your activity profile that contains only the items you want to see and scroll to that screen.

Option 2   Create another activity profile with only items you want to see and switch to it when not navigating.

Option1:  You don't seem to understand the problem. The typical navigation data fields in the extra data screen remain empty during a normal bike ride and are pointless. Accordingly, the data screen is also pointless and makes handling the Edge unnecessarily complicated. Why should I view or scroll through empty data fields or data screens?

Option 2:  An extra activity profile is also not suitable, as you can easily switch to navigation during a normal bike ride, but not change the activity profile.
Nobody wants to stop their activity because of spontaneous navigation and start a new activity with a different profile. That is not the purpose of activitiy profiles.

You can switch activity profiles during an activity (or at least you can on a 530). Go to settings>activity profiles and change to a different one. Try it.

Same on 1040, but perhaps @6956563 is new to edge devices and doesn't understand the very workable solution offered? I have different Activity Profiles for using Turn Guidance and  not using Turn Guidance. Of course "when navigating" has a few meanings, using Turn Guidance, using course point "navigation" or just loading and following a course, Each will activate specific data fields as well as overlapping data fields. Some relevant settings are outside the Profile definition which complicates things somewhat. Different activity profiles with different screens and different fields is probably the only solution at this time other than having a common Profile and enabling ("Show") specific screens depending on need for each ride.

On the Edge, you can switch activity profiles without stopping the activity. This is different from how it works on the Fenix.

I have 3 different profiles for road cycling - 1 for regular riding in areas I know well, 1 for structured training with interval timers, etc, and 1 for navigation where I want a different set of datafields. This indeed is one of the purposes of activity profiles. The Edge is designed for pretty much 1 sport - cycling, although with different disciplines. The Fenix is different, where different activities are really intended for different sports.

Hello, I didn't know that either. How does that work?
For example, if I start with the "Road" profile and then switch to the "Gravel" profile, under which profile does Garmin save my activity? The last one? Or does Garmin save the two activities individually (separately) at the end?

What happens, for example, with data fields that are only installed in one profile and record data in the .fit file?
Will only half of the data appear in the analysis on Garmin Connect?

Native Data Fields & CIQ Apps are not specific to an Activity Profile but are general for all/any profile and the activity data recorded is not dependant on it appearing on any specific data screen, eg I only have 2 sensors, speed and cadence, if I remove cadence from an activity profile's data screens it still gets recorded in the activity fit file, even if I remove it from ALL profile screens, Activities are independent from a navigated course and can contain multiple courses , I can start an activity, select a course, ride till the end of that course , select another course, ride that course and end the activity and the recording contains both courses. Noting I said "Some relevant settings are outside the Profile definition", including the Turn Guidance setting, I can disable Turn Guidance for the second course and just use course points and it still records ok. There are though some setting that are determined at Power Up time, some might not change during an activity. All of this might not have practical value but the solution proposed by PeterK_55 to the original posters problem remains valid . I don't know when the Ride Type is written to the activity file so I don't know if it changes, I have never needed to do that.

There may be some complications re specific CIQ apps and dependencies  but I only have one and it works for all profiles (but it does not write data to the fit file, do any?)

Only one activity is recorded and appears to be classified according to the activity profile active when saving. Try it for yourself.

What you see in a data field isn’t necessarily recorded in the fit file and what is written in the fit file isn’t necessarily available to see in a data field. The fit file mostly contains information about the device type, timestamps, position data (Lat/Lon) elevation, temperature, speed, start/stop/pause events etc.

It’s easier than ever to chang the activity profile. Tap somewhere on the screen where the little house appears to go to the main screen (wich appears when turned on), use the topmost selection to choose wich profile needs to be active, tap it to “open” it and it will be used.

Be aware that if you have an indoor profile and choose this (accidentally) GPS will be turned off until you open an outdoor profile again.
