Battery is draining: screen on all the time. Bettery saver on, dim screen on, sleep on.

My 1040 screen dont' turn off during training: not the screen, don't dim, no auto sleep, nothing, it is always on. My battery is draining verey fast, all the time. Start with 100%, then after 3 hours is 30%. I know the software very well, I am tech guy, I have battery saver on, screen save after 2 min. Nothing. any help?

  • I have never liked "Auto" features, they aren't explained well enough and I prefer to set my own levels at least until I understand what works and what does not.

With some fairly aggressive manual battery saving settings I can get 90hrs+, daytime display 0%, off after 30s, no Wi-Fi or phone while riding, minimal sensors and often just follow route line, no turn guidance. With these I get 90hrs but if I enable "Battery Save" it picks worse settings and forecasts only 45-50hrs. Set these manually and see what you can get maximised and then de-tune according to things you find worthwhile. There is a bug I think with regard to display % & stays on in that the chosen % does not get actioned till the time out, thus if "stays on" it never gets actioned, check levels in a dark room to confirm.

There is a possibility that your device has a fault if your still get excessive battery drain.

  • The major user-controllable factors in battery usage are:

    1. backlight. 100% backlight can be a battery blowtorch - turn it down to 10% intensity.

    2. Which satellite system - GPS only is the most battery efficient, and all you need for road riding. Using multi GNSS draws more power, but in poor GPS locations (eg. MTB in heavy forest or narrow valleys) may improve accuracy.

    3. Which screen. Constantly redrawing the map as you ride along is processor (and therefore battery) intensive. Keep the main screen as a data-only screen, and just scroll to the map screen when you want to do a navigation check.

Also, in normal operation, pairing the Edge with your phone should draw minimal battery, but can be a big power drain, if things go wrong. I'd recommend rebooting BOTH the Edge AND your phone as a first step.
