Edge vs watch

Owner from garmin fenix 3 to epix, tactix and blah blah blah. I've never had an edge device because I see no real purpose other than the big screen. Instead I see a lot of problems with edge devices here. Is there anyone here who can objectively tell me whats the real purpose of an edge device is? With the problems I read here I am hesitant to buy an edge. Don't tell me about the battery because even with the tactix I have done over 500km on my road bike and at the end I had enough battery left. Whats the true pros and cons of the edge versus a watch? are there any functions on the edge that are not on the watch? Thank you.

  • Big screen visible all the time is what makes all the difference to me.

On my Edge I mainly use the workout screen and the map screen to monitor my workouts and where I go. I find monitoring the power infeasible when the watch is on my hand, never mind comparing it to a target, or checking where I am in the workout structure. Zooming and shifting the map on the watch is crazy even when not riding. And I am not even sure if it's possible to check where your co-riders are.

The watch is great for 24/7 health metric monitoring. I find sleep length, resting heart rate and heart rate variability to be very useful. I also like notifications and being able to quickly check weather and calendar, including training calendar from wy wrist. So for me the watch complements the Edge, rather than competes with it.

I could imagine a world where the watch would be my computer and I would just buy a cheap cycling screen. Or where the watch would be a cheap wrist strap and almost everything would be driven from my phone. But I guess it's better for Garmin if we buy two expensive devices ;-)

  • Imagine riding a motorcycle and your map is on a tiny watch screen. Or try watching a movie on a watch. Yes it can be done but for the price of risky inconvenience. It’s all about the larger screen visible all the time.

  • It's easy to glance at the head-unit when using a varia radar, and a large screen makes viewing your data fields easy.

  • I've never had a problem with seeing my varia radar on the watch. Data fields also.

  • when i ride my motorcycle i don't need map unless I'm in Dakar tour

  • so big screen is the only factor for the most people

  • If you don't need what the Edge offers, don't buy it. As you can see, for most people it's about a larger screen visible all the time. If you don't need it, save some bucks and our planet's resources, or spend those on something that you will actually use.

  • You missed the point of the post probably and you are very ironic.

  • I don‘t think  was ironic.
People answered your question that the bigger screen - always visible - is the main reason chosing an Edge.
You answered, that you need no bigger display. You see all on your watch and need a map only for Dakar tour.

So, what…? You need no Edge. Save your money!

  • Bigger screen, navigation and more (10) data fields.
