Edge 1040 Didn't save activity

I did an 85 mile ride whilst in Mallorca on Monday, including an effort at a segment up Puig Major, a 9.6 mile climb. I took almost 4 minutes off my PB but when I saved the ride at the end, nothing happened, it never uploaded to garmin connect or strava etc.

I've had a look in the activities folder on the device but there's not .fit file on that date.

I have an err_log.txt file which matches the approximate time the ride failed to save. Is it possible to view the content of this file to try and find out what went wrong?

I remember that some older Garmin devices were continuously (or periodically) saving the current activity and made it user-accessible. I don't understand why this is no longer the case for cases like this.

I assume that you don't see the lost activity in history. If the fit file is not there, you can try to recover the data following https://forums.garmin.com/apps-software/mobile-apps-web/f/garmin-connect-web/253040/how-do-i-get-my-activity-back-if-i-delete-it/1204852#1204852

I used Photorec in the past and after a lot of effort got a part of my activity back, but not in a shape that would let me upload it to Garmin Connect :-(
