I am Done with the 1040

Constant ANT Dropouts, multiple versions of firmware, multiple hard resets to try and fix, swapping out equipment to try and figure out what might be causing it. In the end stuff it, I am not your BETA tester Garmin and your product fails to work in the most basic of ways. Contacted reseller today to arrange a refund.
It is NOT my attached equipment it all works fine on an old 830 that just ticks along without issue. Maybe if more people voted with their wallet they would actually fix stuff?
Doubt it though, push another shiny expensive sports watch out the door? Job Done.

  • I had actually had a good experience with the 1040 until the last two firmware releases that basically rendered the 1040 useless to me (I need power and cadence, I can't get either any more after the last two  firmware updates ). I remain amazed at how shabbily Garmin treats its customers. It's almost as if Garmin knowingly causes customers pain. The company doesn't seem to have any interest in QA and just launches software on the public and waits for us to tell it what they just broke. It's really a shame. I doubt I'll ever buy another Garmin product -- and I've spent thousands on their stuff over the years.

  • Ladies and gentlemen

The real problem with this edge 1040 comes from us, the users of this GPS!!!!
Unfortunately we are not good enough to explain to Garmin the multiple problems we encounter.
Because ultimately, where are the bug fixes? There are few, so garmin must feel like its edge 1040 is working properly.

It is incredible that this GPS, unworthy of the price displayed, is not Garmin's priority, worse Garmin is pushing back the release of the FW as if this GPS had no problem, 3 months or more to wait for bug fixes is incomprehensible , it really smells of hardware and compatibility problems with the other sensors.
One wonders if there are cyclists in the development team for this edge 1040.
I have never encountered a disconnection from my Varia 515, and well with the fw 19.08b today I inaugurate my first problems with the Varia, poorly recognized flow of cars, forgotten cars, and a disconnection.

More than a year after its release, how is it possible that a company like Garmin cannot stabilize this product through updates?
I did not resell my edge 830 which had given me complete satisfaction and which I have been using again recently. There is really only the battery of the 1040 which is keeping me from parting with it, for long distances and trip, otherwise I would have caused a scandal at Garmin to obtain a refund

  • I never update unless I have to. It's trite, but it's true: never change a running system

  • Not got a problem with it to report to be honest. Pretty rock solid for me. Surprised so many have ant+ dropouts (which I have had on other devices but not this)

  • No problem either with ant+ (2 4iiii power sensors, 2 speed sensors, hrm), everything works well, except yesterday with the Varia.
On an old FW I had some problems reconnecting when the edge 1040 wakes up, but I no longer encounter this problem.

I think that each of us benefits differently from our edge 1040, some are content to follow a track on a short course, with speed and heart rate, in this case if you don't have too many problems on your route then the edge 1040 will not reveal too many bugs, perhaps climbpro free will give you some surprises, climbs that do not exist, climbs completed while there are still 150 climbs to do

For those who push the edge 1040 to its limit, with long routes, and especially with variable weather, with a power sensor, variable lighting, who follow their training load, well things are very different.

For the moment I appreciate the edge 1040, thanks to climbpro free even if this functionality arrived late on this GPS and it can be improved, and also thanks to its battery for ultra cycling, but the operation of personal poi for displaying them on the edge poi page is really a disaster, you have to tinker to be able to create a racing strategy with your personal poi

  • I wonder whether this thread is an indication of why Garmin appears to do nothing about certain issues. Given that people tend to come on here only when they have an issue, and taking into consideration that there are some contributors to this thread who have experienced none of the issues mentioned, we really can't be sure as to how widespread the problems are. Whilst I fully empathise with with those members experiencing these glitches, and know very well how frustrating it is, I also have to consider that Garmin probably have a more accurate handle on the extent of the problem. It must be much easier to identify and fix an issue that everybody is experiencing than it is to put right a problem that only 1% of users have.

  • Unfortunately the statistically insignificant have also paid full price for the same product as the others 99%.

  • The problems I have experienced are affecting many users, but still Garmin has not been up to the task to get a swift problem resolution. Like electric bikes not syncronizing a workout to Garmin Connect without using a cable. It took a long time to fix it, even if that was a bug introduced by a firmware revision  - should be fairly easy to rollback, instead they are pumping out new features.

The 1040 also introduced bugs to features working on previous releases - looks like regression testing is not in their playbook at all.

  • I was careful to avoid even implying insignificance, that's on you Marty. My point was that finding and solving a problem that affects very few people is probably more difficult, less obvious, than one that affects everybody.
