Stamina App not predictive for endurance events

When this feature was new ~1yr ago I used it during longer Gravel races and was shocked to see after 20-30 miles that I had a predicted endurance remaining of 15 miles. So I never looked at it again. I ended up feeling strong throughout that 75 mile race.

This month I had another long event so I thought I'd put the app to use again, but had the same useless result. Despite having a high Endurance score going in (I love this feature BTW) and being well prepped for the event, I was 25% in and being told my stamina prediction was 10-15 miles further. again I finished strong.

I have seen other people questioning the validity of this app some time ago. But it seems there has been no improvement, so I wanted to provide my feedback.

Same here. After Stamins was against zero I rode another 200km. Completely useless.

  • The proof of a new useless functionality, and instead of correcting the bugs and stabilizing the edg 1040, we are adding crappy functions...

Garmin make the edge 1040 work well for cyclists

    - training with power sensors that remain connected
    - climbpro free more reliable
    - gps that does not restart on routes
    - you can create POIs on Garmin Connect, why do they not appear on the GPS without using a hack, there is a POI page on the 1040, being able to make a race strategy is useful in bikepacking, especially since its autonomy is ideal for bikepacking.

  • For me Stamina is wrong in the other direction and always claims I have between 30% and 50% Stamina left when in reality I'm completely done for. As the manual says it uses the VO2 estimate for calculating the stamina. I guess it extrapolates from that to estimate long time activities. That would be two estimates for getting the stamina, no wonder ít's so incorrect.

  • Are you guys using both a power meter and a heart rate monitor at the same time? According to the Manual you need both to get good Stamina results. My results can be trusted when using both but on my MTB with no power meter, it is useless. I even made a video about it in my YT channel when I started testing and using Stamina.

I use dual sided Assioma Favero Power pedals and a Polar H10 Heart Rate Strap. Every ride. Since years.

    More similar rides

  • I see what you mean. I do 60-70 km rides and all works well. Thanks for the feedback.

  • For my training rides typically between 30 and 90 km it also works well. Also zeroing my stamina does not mean that I can't ride anymore, but I am clearly struggling (feel done) and it's probably not productive.

Christoph, in what zone are you riding for hours with your stamina estimated at 0? I usually zero my stamina during VO2Max or anaerobic training with insufficient rests and I can maintain the target power for maybe up to a minute beyond that. From my stamina estimates during my training rides, I don't feel like I would happily keep riding even in a base zone when my stamina runs out. Easy pedalling in recovery zone? I know I can do that all day :-)

If VO2 is the base this might be relating:

    VO2max not updating
